Iain Duncan Smith: I could live on ?53 in benefits a week

The work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, has been challenged to prove that he can fulfil his claim that he could live on ?53 a week in benefits.

Defending the vast array of welfare reforms being introduced this week as part of the government's deficit reduction programme, Duncan Smith was asked on BBC Radio 4 whether, following an example of a market trader David Bennett, he could survive on ?53 a week ? the amount Bennett claimed he was left with to live on and roughly equivalent to the lowest rate of jobseeker's allowance given to adults under 25.

"If I had to I would, "Duncan Smith replied. His claim prompted an online petition calling on him to prove it that chalked up 25,000 signatures in its first day.

What I am trying to do is at least use the money we have got to be fair," he said. "What we are trying to do is get control of the welfare bill ? without actually slashing or attacking people, we are trying to reform and change it."

As many as 660,000 social housing tenants are deemed to have a spare room and will lose an average ?14 a week.

he's the biggest sponger there is,
he's sponged off his millionaire wife's family all his married life,
he sponged from the Army for 5 years as a bag carrier for a Major,
and now he's sponging ?143k a year as a MP.

I honestly believe there trying to kill off the surplus population, a kind of economic cleansing,

Also scrapped today are crisis loans,
where are people supposed to turn too now in an emergency.

The head of the housing associations stated last week the bedroom tax will cost another ?140 million a year in housing benefit than it does now, and he released the figures to prove it.

millionaires get a ?100k a year tax cut, how can it be fair.

The Tory's are pure scum. and the Lib Dems are even worse for allowing it to happen.

crisis loans ended as its out of control tshirtman. if i lost my purse at the weekend i cant phone my work and get money to replace it. 80% of crisis loan applications were on a monday and the reasons given are outrageous at times. i had friends working there. its being replaced by food vouchers and gas or electricity cards from local councils as thats all crisis loans should be used for.

the number of people owing ?1500 (the most you can owe) is unbelievable. they get the money as they wait for their benefit then they wont pay it back. they pay off ?30 then phone for another crisis loan. some people have had hundreds of them. was never meant to be like that and thats why its gone.
