Criminals could be forced to pay for costs of justice system

Criminals will be made contribute to the cost of the justice system under a new system announced by the Justice Secretary.

The cost of running courts could be taken out of the future earnings of offenders to stop taxpayers having to pay for costs created by a minority, Chris Grayling revealed today.

Currently offenders can be required to make payments to victims, the courts and even Government agencies through a range of orders and fines but there is no power to make them pay directly towards the costs of running the court.

Criminal business in HM Courts and Tribunals Service in 2013/14 will cost ?665.5million with almost 1.47 million defendants proceeded against at magistrates' courts in the year up to September 2012.

Why should the law-abiding, hard-working majority pay for a court service for the minority who break the law?

Which criminals they are talking about, drug dealers govt take every penny in there names legally, it?s the street criminals have nothing to give and on dole they have nothing except few months behind bars and back on streets, how could they be forced to pay for costs of justice system??

Well then, they will be forced to forfiegt their dole money.. no dole once thats all gone.. they will go back to crime and end up in jail...

Id bring back death penalty, and make them buy the toxins to kill them.. maybe turn criminals into navis..

Aye I can see it now, caught speeding and pay the cost of:

Camera film
Servicing of camera
Someone to view film
CPS time
Typing up, sending out speeding ticket
Magistrates time
Prosecutions time
Hire of courtroom
Handling your license and postage to DVLA

It does mean of course that if you plead not guilty and get found guilty that the costs will be higher.. The idea being to deter people from pleading not guilty. On top of that the fine, so ?60 fine, ?6,000 in costs.

yes valid point, speeding is not really a crime, if a person went to rob a bank AND posted on an INFERIOR forum thats a crime.

Your fire / firework if that rocket had a serianl number on it and it was traced back to the shop at the end of the road - who sold it to the bloke in the next street - would you press crimnal charges? If I knew the answer to that I'd sue the tw@ who launched the rocket last year that burnt down my conservatory, not just for the excess, but the full cost - why should I claim on my insurance for someone who negligently fires off explosive charges? Normally that's the US who do that sort of thing, or North Korea
