Homeless Fears For Millions Without Savings

One-in-three people would struggle to pay their rent or mortgage within a month of losing their job, a charity has warned.

Some 35% of workers - around 8.6 million people - do not have enough money put aside to meet their housing needs beyond four weeks, a YouGov poll for Shelter found.

Around a fifth of Britons - roughly 4.4 million people - would be at risk of becoming homeless immediately.

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter , said: "These figures paint an alarming picture of a nation where the buffer between having a home and potentially becoming homeless is a single pay cheque.

"Millions are living on the edge of a crisis, only secure in their homes for a matter of weeks.

"At the same time, support for people who have lost their homes is being stripped away.

"It's easy to see why every 15 minutes, another family in England finds themselves homeless."

The survey of 2,000 people found families with children would fare even worse in the event of redundancy.

if some one became unemployed and couldnt pay the rent/morgage the council would pay the rent/morgage interest, the real problem in todays society is the proper homeless ( probably 1000s up and down the country ) who live on the streets, hostels etc, people living on the streets in this day and age ffs.

The banks have been told they have to help people who get into difficulty paying their mortage. One such way is to allow them to only pay the interest, which is quiet a bit higher than the 0.5% quoted.

its not the council who would pay any mortgage interest its the dwp its called Mortgage Interest Relief and ive know people to get that for years. housing benefit (rent only) as now been moved from local councils to dwp as well under universal credit.

from personal experience (had homeless living above me) people are normally homeless through their own fault. i have not come across any "nice" homeless people. the ones that got put above me for a period of 5 yrs made my life a misery. druggies, alchies, mothers battering kids, loud music most of the night so im going to work like a zombie while they stay in their pit all day. during one winter they went out for new year. the main water tank burst and flooded me completely. they came back 2 days later and got rehoused by the council while i lived in a mess for months waiting on insurance payout. 6 dehumidifiers etc. thats when my sympathy for homeless went out the window. again my own opinion.

ive never had savings in my life and never will. lots of debt though trying to keep paying bills etc. people on this forum have jumped on the bandwagon saying people on benefit would end up in debt due to benefit cuts well tough why not. those of us that work are! in the last 5 yrs benefits have went up 20% while wages have went up 5% so time benefits were curbed.
