New Taskforce To Tackle Roadwork Woes

A new taskforce has been set up to try to reduce the cost and the disruption caused by roadworks across Britain.

The latest research shows that ?435m of taxpayers' money has been wasted over the past two years as a result of contractors poorly resurfacing trenches after digging up roads.

It is estimated that this amount of cash would fill in the equivalent of eight million potholes.

We really shouldn't be filling potholes we should be repairing stretches of road. I think there has been an agenda over the last few years not to repair roads properly to spend money elsewhere. Where I stay they are repairing long streches of pavements that don't need done as they look in good nick. Also these little islands and fences. I forgot to mention bike lanes by narrowing roads. Along with speed humps that don't slow buses down and damage your suspension so that your braking distance will increase causing more accidents. They build all this crap around crumbling surfaces. Surely if you are in charge of the road network your first priority is a smooth and even surface.

In our area the only activities I have noticed in the last 5 years is not to spend money on roads but to earn money on roads our council keeps marking double yellow lines and we hardly have any parking left on the road.

Sometimes it would be better not to let them resurface a road. I don't know if it's just up here in Smoggyland, but engineers seem to have forgotten what the Romans gave us..... a domed road surface to allow water to drain away at the side of the road.

There are large sections of major roads here that are death traps as soon as it rains. In their infinite wisdom the roads have been made completely flat with slight undulations in the surface. These fill with water, but don't drain off to the side of the road. This gets worse in winter when these pools of water freeze...damaging the road surface as well as providing a 60mph skidpan.

There's also a problem with the type of tarmac being used. Old roads are harder wearing & offer more grip than the smooth slick crap they use now. My street was given a topcoat of this new crap, 3 years later & the same potholes they were supposed to repair are back again.

The new slick tarmac that has less gravel content is designed to lower noise, but safety should come first.

hang on I'll cry they spend ?435 million out of the last 2 years worth of money from the motorist which, from memory, is ?80 billion over 2 years. So what it's a drop in the ocean to the money they're raking in. I have to admit though that it would be better spent repairing the roads properly, perhaps it's spent on contract meetings and expenses.

All comes down to risk again, "how much will we be sued for if we don't repair this road?" It's about time councils and the highways agency were sued for not only the damage to cars but the lives they put at risk. The A63, many stretches of the M62, A1 and A19 I drive up and down daily are no better than B roads. I've seen roadworks on the M62 now for the last 6 months (maybe a year) or so close to Whitley Bridge, never seen anyone working on it in all that time. The cones are probably on lease or hire at a cost of ?1,000 a day each, ing waste of money.

Don't need a task force that sits drinking coffee and talking all day, the f'king roads need fixing full stop.

They resurfaced a major road near us.. We use those road everyday as its the o?ly road in and out..

When I say resurfaced.. I mean they rolled a thin layer of Tarmac over the old..

This was 6 months or less ago... Guess what.. Its ****ed already.. The original mac underneath is visible...

Of course not it was a 7 year dream filmed during a gap in the series Dallas, after which everyone woke up and nothing had happened at all.

Oddly enough that same nothing also happens with road building and repairs. It's summer now, a bank holiday tomorrow, so no doubt the councils will have the contractors in at double time putting a very thin layer of tar on the roads and pouring road chippings all over it, so that you can have stone chipped paint and windscreens for free. Doesn't cost the council a bean for the damage to your car *shrug*

They should be chasing the companies that done the repairs for the money back. I bet its the ones who ****ed it up in the first place that get more work from our councils.
