A BURNLEY fraudster who took part in eBay and internet banking scams worth up to ?11,000, kept his freedom.
The town's crown court was told how Shahin Syed, 43, received ?4,000 for his Mercedes, which he put on the auction website with false plates in 2009. He didn't deliver the vehicle, kept the cash and then put it up for sale on a different site.
Syed, said to have been in debt and desperate for cash, also allowed his name, bank details and computer to be used in the bank con, aiding and abetting a ?6,800 identity theft in 2010. The account of a man not known to the defendant had been raided and cash withdrawn from machines, spent in a fragrance shop and at a food trading company.
The defendant, now a waiter, was said to have realised his time living in Burnley was not a happy one and had moved to Scotland. He admitted two counts of fraud and was given a 12-month community order with 180 hours? unpaid work.
