Middle-lane hoggers to be punished

Drivers who hog the middle lane or tailgate other cars will face on-the-spot fines of ?100 and three points on their licence.

Police are also expected to get powers to issue instant fixed penalty notices for not giving way at a junction or using the wrong lane at a roundabout.

Details of a crackdown on anti-social motoring are due to be released by the Government in a statement to Parliament today.

Transport minister Stephen Hammond said: "Careless drivers are a menace and their negligence puts innocent people's lives at risk.

"That is why we are making it easier for the police to tackle problem drivers by allowing them to immediately issue a fixed penalty notice rather than needing to take every offender to court.

"We are also increasing penalties for a range of driving offences to a level which reflects their seriousness and which will ensure that they are consistent with other similar penalty offences."

Until now such activity has generally gone unpunished because of the bureaucracy involved in prosecuting a case.

A motorist has to be stopped by a police officer, a summons issued and evidence presented in court.

Other changes being brought forward by the Government include increasing the fine for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seat belt from ?60 to ?100.

Careless drivers puts innocent people's lives at risk, what a lot of bulls, what about the dangerous potholes and most white lines on stop roads have been rub down and dangers to young drivers, I know we have bad drivers but lets face it, it's another way of easy money for the government to get, hit the car driver again.

Ahh more revenue from the motorist. Why don't they concentrate on on the spot fines for cyclists who:

1) Jump red lights
2) Ignore red lights
3) Ride on footpaths
4) Ride on the wrong side of the road
5) Ride without lights

or is it too difficult for the police to catch them, rather than pointing a camera and sending a fine through the post? Fining cyclists heavily would also aid in cutting down the number of deaths from their stupid behaviour.

Cue the cyclists to tell me how safe they are and that car drivers are always killing them...... because

a) It's too dangerous to ride on the roads, so it's better to ride on the footpaths and run into pedestrians
b) Traffic regulations only apply to motorised vehicles
c) Car drivers are always at fault
d) It's their god given right to break the law
e) I'm a bad person for pointing out 1 to 5

Errr excuse mr gastonj. Here in meat city its a shit hole, as a cyclist, pedestrian and dk member, if walking would rather meet a cyclist, who normally slow down and give way, rather than a bitch with a push chair who just hogs the sidewalk


as a cyclist the sidewalk is safer than the road as theres big thick lorrys

as a driver prefer cyvlists on the sidewalk as there is less chance of hitting them

This won't change anything. People will still have the right to contest the tickets in court.

I was a little worried about this to begin with, possibly due to my occasional tailgating of slow ass morons hogging the fast lane while doing less than 70mph. But then I realized....there won't be any lane hoggers to get in my way.. The police that pull me would also have to pull the lane hogger otherwise it's discrimination

Something does have to be done about the lazy, dangerous drivers that never use their mirrors & switch lanes on roundabouts & through lighted junctions as if they were the only people on the road.

I ranted about this before. So lets educate the morons in a moral attempt to save them many hundreds of pounds in fines.

don't start me on cyclists the amount the ride on the path around is unbelievable the kinda get pissed at me when I stick my arms out and make sure the room they have is the road.

Law states if your over 14 then riding on paths IS against the law of course I don't mind if it is a cycle route but pig headed cyclists on paths which are not and me will come to arguments every time after one almost knocked me over into the road and the path of a lorry, I have zero time for them.

I went to work on the bike today, zipping up the M62 and A1 I found that the motorists had stopped hugging the middle lane, the basseds are now stuck in the outside lane instead number of times I had to flash my lights to get them to move into the middle lane

Meaty, the law is the law at the end of the day. The law about not cycling on footpaths is there to protect pedestrians. Cyclists breaking the law should not be ignored but be prosecuted - otherwise why bother with making the law or having laws if we can choose to ignore them? or not face any penalty?

tbh cyclist's need to made to get some basic lesson's I doubt many of them know the laws correctly, or it's more of a case that they know the police don't bother to nick cyclists. If the law was harder on cyclist's then you would have better behaved cyclists which would benefit road and footpath users both.
