    You're all concerned then?

Google, BT and a clutch of other web giants and internet service providers have been put on notice - the government wants action on sorting out the problem of harmful content on the internet.

In her letter to the companies, the culture secretary says there is widespread public concern:
"Whether these concerns focus on access to illegal ~~~~ographic content, the proliferation of extremist material which might incite racial or religious hatred, or the ongoing battle against online copyright theft, a common question emerges: what more can be done to prevent offensive online content potentially causing harm?"

"Woolwich is the latest catalyst," an aide to Ms Miller says. "Enough is enough - concentrated effort is now needed by the whole industry."

BBC News - Government demands action on web safety

There you go, the internet is obviously to blame. Maria Miller knows your thoughts, she has GCHQ read them every night while you're asleep. Harmful content will eventually become "questioning whether the government is right...."

Jim Killock, of the Open Rights Group, said the government should be talking about concerted international action against criminals posting illegal content, rather than attempting to blame internet companies.

Will end up like the great firewall of china if this keeps up, I can see why they want to filter the net I truly can but where will the line stop ?

the great thing about the net back before everyone was on it was you could do and find anything, a uncensored library of information, now we cant do this we cant do that do not download do not pass go etc etc I just hope they do not cripple the net while they are trying to fix it. And all the time it is the poor isp's that have to sort it out surly it should be the governments job to filter the content ? they build the filter and have all the isp's route though it ?

ISP's may comply if handed a court order. But they won't stop the use of proxy sites.

The government are just pushing for that police state.

Would be with something a bit more dangerous than a wet fish if I had my way, and May for constantly saying she'll do something and failing. She should shut up until she's got all the angles sorted. Only makes her look stupid.

It's not about pron, it's about control of the people as Canker has said. Since 2001 we been walked into a police state in the name of anti-terrorism, even though the majority of it isn't related - as can be seen by the stupid comments by the government about Woolwich,. We are one of the most watched societies in the world, yet the majority have done nothing wrong - doesn't make sense surely it's the minority that should be watched and lose their freedom. *shrug*

Anyway Ms Miller says you've all had enough anyway. New slogan for MP's - "MP's, have read your thoughts and know you don't want freedom to choose"

and here goes, wave goodbye to any freedom you thought you had on the internet....

Senior politicians from across the political divide have united to call for UK security services to be given greater internet monitoring powers. In a letter seen by Newsnight and The Times newspaper three former Labour home secretaries, three senior Tories and one Liberal Democrat urge changes. They say "coalition niceties" must not hinder counter terror efforts. A bill allowing the monitoring of all UK citizens' internet use was dropped after Liberal Democrat opposition. However, following the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich there have been calls for the Communications Data Bill, dubbed the "snoopers' charter" by opponents, which was shelved in May to be revived.

The letter was signed by former Labour home secretaries Jack Straw, David Blunkett and Alan Johnson, along with former Conservative home secretary Lord Baker and defence secretary Lord King, and Liberal Democrat Lord Carlile, who until 2011 was the independent reviewer of government anti-terror laws. In issuing the letter Mr Straw teamed up with Ben Wallace, the MP for Wyre and Preston North and parliamentary aide to minister without portfolio Ken Clarke. As a parliamentary aide Mr Wallace must not differ from the government position. The letter, which was passed to Newsnight and which will be published in The Times on Friday, puts renewed pressure on the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, whose party claimed a month ago they would not allow the bill to become law while the Liberal Democrats were in government.

It also shows support amongst backers of the bill is undiminished, despite claims British security services used information gathered on UK citizens by Prism - the US secret intelligence programme revealed last week.

BBC News - Senior politicians unite to issue call for data bill

Perhaps someone could explain the link between the sick murder of a soldier and the internet, other than proving that there is cross party support to use any excuse whatsoever to remove the right to privacy.

The question has to be "am I legally obligated to fill out or answer the form?" If not then they can ck off anyway.

Just checked, yes there is no choice.

I refuse to do a number of things such as today, having to phone up a parking company and provide them with my credit card details, my car registration as well as my name, address etc just so I could pay to park. I drove out and parked on a street for free, rather than do that. I refused for 15 years to allow my employer to use my photograph for publicity purposes; it's only in the last 3 months that I have allowed them to use 2 images. Prior to that I only gave permission to take a pic for my ID badge, and only for that purpose. I hardly use social media. When I registered to vote I asked to be removed form the open register and there I will stay. I have no intention of providing anyone with any detail unless there is no other way to do something and they can assure me that they comply with the DPA and that my data will not be sold or used for any other purpose. The information collected for the electroal register is sold to marketing companies by every council in the country, but only the open register...

While I appreciate that we live in an information rich world, I don't intend to pay for any of it by providing my details. I recall having a discussion in the SB once with someone who was getting "free texts"... there is no such thing as free, to get the free text you have to provide your email address, which they will sell to marketing companies, so tell me again how that can be termed as "free"? Free email by providing your mobile number as a security method; how's that free you've just provided a mobile number for them to sell to marketing companies? And so to those who receive PPI/shyster ambulance chaser phone calls, you probably sold your details to them for free email; was it really worth it? and do you still think it was "free" ?
