    Another get rich quick scheme

UK shale gas resources may be far greater than previously thought, a report for the government says.
The British Geological Survey estimates there may be 1,300 trillion cubic feet of shale gas present in the north of England - double previous estimates.
Meanwhile the government has announced measures to enable shale gas drilling as part of its infrastructure plans.

Energy Minister Michael Fallon described shale gas as "an exciting new energy resource".

The BGS said its estimate for shale gas resources in the Bowland Basin region, which stretches from Cheshire to Yorkshire, represented potential resources, but "not the gas that might be possible to extract".
"Shale gas clearly has potential in Britain but it will require geological and engineering expertise, investment and protection of the environment," it said.
Drilling companies have previously estimated that they may be able to extract around 10% of this gas - equivalent to around 130 trillion cubic feet.

BBC News - UK shale gas resources 'greater than thought'

The process has helped boost the domestic energy industry in the US in recent years, where oil production has risen and gas prices have plummeted.
Call me a cynic, but I seem to recall something similar being said about North Sea Oil and we pay one of the highest prices in the world for fuel, although a great deal of that is 'duty' and VAT. It will probably mean the companies take the gas, make a profit and the UK public gets to pay for it all and the potential hazards of extracting it.

    Not "probably" but Definitely !!!
Fasten your seat belts ready for the price hikes and the resulting earth tremors/earthquakes caused by the fracking.
We are Definitely gonna get fracked !!

Only going to be fracking in the north of England though. Saw the map on the site, the south will be happy if it causes quakes 'cos it'll demolish a bit more of the north and save them letting it decay.

        PARTLY ON AND OFF TOPIC:-

Was mentioned somewhere, that found new gas in Ingland, oh good, price goes down, no price WILL be going up!

          Im all for fracking..

Look at it this way! it creates british jobs for british workers! if the earth shakes every now and then its not really a problem.. its never gonna be to big on the scale.. we dont live on the border of a tectonic plate?

I live within 1mile< of the supposadly largest wind farm in the UK.. i can see a few of them if i look.. but tbh theyre not ugly to look at.. they're only noisy when your stood under them.

British just like to complain about everything! EVERYYTHING!

At least if we have our own gas we can gas loads of people without the risk of getting the pipeline disconnected!

I for 1 moment dont think we are using/taking that much oil/gas etc.... that the earth cannot replace by doing it natural process all day everyday 24/7

I'm just waiting to see how long it takes the water companies to release data on water contamination due to fracking.

Of course we'll have to get past all the cover ups before we get the real data.

The government has outlined plans to give tax breaks to companies involved in the UK's nascent shale gas industry.
It has proposed cutting the tax on some of the income generated from producing shale gas - found in underground shale rock formations - from 62% to just 30%.
The plans would make the UK the "most generous" regime for shale gas in the world, the government said.
But they have been criticised by environmentalists, with Friends of the Earth calling them a "disgrace".
Greenpeace added that communities affected by fracking - the technique for extracting shale gas - faced a lot of disruption for very little gain.

Chancellor George Osborne says Britain must be" at the forefront of the shale gas revolution"

Chancellor George Osborne said shale gas was a resource with "huge potential" for the UK's energy mix.

"We want to create the right conditions for industry to explore and unlock that potential in a way that allows communities to share in the benefits," he said.
"I want Britain to be a leader of the shale gas revolution because it has the potential to create thousands of jobs and keep energy bills low for millions of people."

The government has also confirmed plans to give communities that host shale gas sites ?100,000 per site, and up to 1% of all revenues from production.

Water UK, which represents the UK water companies, points out that fracking requires huge amounts of water which could put a strain on local supplies.
It also says the drilling and the fracturing process could damage water pipes.
"The water industry is not taking sides. If it (fracking) goes ahead we want to ensure corners are not cut and standards compromised," said Jim Marshall, policy and business adviser at Water UK.

BBC News - 'Generous' tax breaks for shale gas industry outlined

So giving out more tax breaks at a time when we're told there is no money, to companies that were happy to drill without tax breaks The wording is ambiguous as well:

"I want Britain to be a leader of the shale gas revolution because it has the potential to create thousands of jobs and keep energy bills low for millions of people."
Which isn't the same as saying that energy bills will be lowered by the drilling and extraction, nor that any jobs will be created for UK staff *shrug*

The government has also confirmed plans to give communities that host shale gas sites ?100,000 per site, and up to 1% of all revenues from production.
Probably given to councils to spend, which means ?99,999 will be spent on administration of the "windfall" and ?1 spend on the postage stamp.
