    Waste of cash

Reducing the number of submarines carrying Trident ballistic missiles would be "reckless", Philip Hammond has said on the eve of a report into the future of the UK's nuclear deterrent.

The defence secretary said downsizing the submarine fleet from the current four boats would amount to a "part-time deterrent" and would not save money.
A review into alternatives to the UK weapons system is published on Tuesday.
The Lib Dems insisted on the study amid disagreements with the Conservatives.

The UK has had a continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent - with at least one submarine on patrol at any given time - for more than 40 years and has used the Trident system since the early 1980s.

BBC News - Trident: Reducing nuclear fleet would be reckless, says Hammond

So at an estimated cost of around ?600 million a year we have wasted ?240 billion on something we would never have used anyway? Waste of money, I'd get rid of it and save paying the Americans for it. Even more so since I believe that we are not "allowed" to launch our own nukes without permission from the Queen anyway. Apparently if the chiefs of staff though Dave was a nut and wanted them to fire they can appear to the queen to stop it. What would we do if it was Germany or Greece attacking eh?.....

the trouble is when they were built they may have had a deterrent against others, but the rules have changed and your enemy is not looking at you anymore, they can be around you and within,i dont agree with nuclear weapons as they have no boarders,on the other hand any meteors coming soon that need to be destructed?

Hmm I've never heard the government claim they are a deterrent against meteors, perhaps you could sell the concept to Philip Hammond as justification for the government to get us into even more debt with their friends

So furst question are these things yellow?

seconldy, imagine your trapped on the top floor of a buliding, the fire department are down the pub, you see a small window only big enough to stick your head through, you find in your manbag or handbag a HALON fire extingsher that says in big letters. THIS STUFF WILL KILL ANY FIRE AND YOU IF YOU GET TO CLOSE

        what do you do?

        3) so your in this yellow submarine tridant - does that mean it has 3 wheels? So iraq has just tweeted theres a missable coming your way, you click the home page, no emericans on line, no even the man from delmonte to say yes, what di you do?

thats a banana for desert ,are you thinking of a big vibrator?

secondly i would look for a bigger window so i could climb out of,i would take out my roll of duck tape and my swiss army knife with i also carry in my manbag and tape the fire extinguisher to me ,before jumping i would open a can of red bull to quench my thirst, god those 300ml ones are big, hack your way through the window and jump and while plummeting down flap your wings fast and seconds before you hit the ground let rip with the fire extinguisher to slow your decent, and lucky me i landed on tracy barlows soft bits .

ohh and the tridant was renamed because the body repair shop was closed so it had to sail off with threedents and it was yellow on its previous mission stuck on a sandy beach no one could see it as the beach was yellow also.

what do you do ,we have a sing along to raise morale, its all in code so others cant under stand .

true they were designed during the cold war with the nuclear armed eastern bloc as the primary adversary or threat, but nobody had foreseen the end to the USSR, and nobody foreseeing what happened in the middle east and likewise nobody can foresee what will be a threat to us in 20 or 30 or 40 years etc etc. As the dynamic world power changes areas of conflict and long held tensions and gripes will most certainly mean we are not in for a peaceful future.

Personally I would prefer we kept them despite I like many others would much rather live in world where such weapons did not exist. However history teaches us that there will always be some individuals or groups whether they may be politically or religiously motivated that have views and ambitions that do not fit onto the peaceful non aggressive utopian society we would like to see.. Conventional weapons as the current status quo stands would more than likely be enough to offer adequate protection and deal with any foe in the near term who may wish to do us harm. However we cannot see into the future and who will have gained such weapons and intend to use them to up their status or bargaining power in some spat they may have. I imagine the yanks will blat them first and leave us with little or nothing to do but lets not pretend we know what the future holds. I hope they will never we used, a white elephant maybe, but one i prefer we have for ourselves.

As we all know there are a few loon nations in our world today and a few non country affiliated organizations who have a hard on for getting such weapons and probably some zealot tit in their ranks may well be stupid enough to use them so he can be a martyr and sees no reason why thousands of others can't be as well.

I think there is another option though and that is missile defence shields, once perfected they may render the ICBM obsolete anyway and give us our world without these weapons...

Then we will just be left with the nuts who can carry little dirty bombs in suitcases or in the back of cars, trucks or on boats and ships and take them straight to the doorstep of their adversary. We all know how determined a few men can be with just a few airliners and the will to die for their cause..

The only nuts left in the world are those that would launch the missiles. Even if terrorists got hold of a nuke and launched it - where would we launch ours back? That in itself makes them pointless. Yes the world isn't a safe place, however when you don't even know who, or where, the enemy is how can you launch a nuke attack back? Since they're a bunch of ing lunatics anyway they will not be deterred - we're talking of people who strap bombs to themselves, do you really think us having nukes will deter them?

Yes no problem, let's build a 60 foot high wall, line it it machine guns and missiles just in case that way everything is covered. My only reservation with that is "which way will the weapons be pointed?"
