Car Parking 'Cash Cow' Plan For Homeowners

Householders should be free to turn their driveway into a car park to boost their income and help provide cheaper parking spaces, Communities Secretary Eric Pickles says.

The Cabinet minister has promised to clamp down on a "back-door parking tax" that forces residents to seek planning permission to charge commuters to park on their property.

New government guidance will allow homeowners to rent out their drives for a single car without making a planning application.

It comes after some town halls demanded that households apply for "change of use" planning permission costing ?385, with the threat of a ?20,000 fine if they did not, Mr Pickles said.

never knew you needed planning permission to do that.

bit steep, paying ?385 just for the man from delmonte to say yes.

should be a ?20 charge for ALL planning permission, except developers of large hosuong estates, or where indusrial unit turned into domestic flats of ?1000 per flat. w@ankers turning industrial units into flats and making fortune.

I do not think there is going to be planning permission for miner development, you can now built an attic without permission, I better get that drive way to start paying for it self and have some cash ???????? revenue to help me pay for my council tax.

I wonder if I need a planning permission to park van on the drive way selling hotdog???

I once spoke to a bloke who lived oposite eastlands football stadium.. those not in the know this is the stadium of Manchester City.. Anyway he was saying he was approached by a man who wanted to pay him ?200 a week to park his car on his drive during match days.. he told me that he had to turn the guy down.. because it was against what he stands for.. He's a Manchester United fan..

Now if i had a drive for one car.. i'd rip up the flower bed.. bulldoze the gates and get the locals to tarmac it and fit 2 cars on.. ?200 until someone else comes along and offers more

It really has nothing to do with the council, unless you're sticking a sign up advertising a new car park. Privately renting out a car parking space to someone on a one to one basis is nothing to do with them, it's like renting out a spare room - the tax man will bite you though. Utter bollox to say you have to pay to rent someone a parking space.

For ?200 quid a week a car I'd put a ramp on the drive way so I could park loads on the roof of the house..back garden..bathroom.., send the family to neighbours for the loo and showers ....stack them high - I'd keep the bedrooms not going to pay bedroom tax
