Hampshire Police apology over stolen caravan

A couple have received an apology from police after they were told their stolen caravan could not be seized - as another family was living in it.

The uninsured caravan, worth about ?30,000, was found in September on a travellers' site in Hook, Hampshire.

Kath McClelland and partner Mick Curry, who live near Farnham, Surrey, were told officers had no powers to seize it and that it was a civil matter.

The Hampshire force has apologised for its handling of the episode.

The force said it still stood by its decision not to take the caravan which it made after seeking legal advice.

    'Man in a pub'

But the case has been reopened and a spokeswoman said officers were now searching for the vehicle which has gone missing.

She said police were confident they could seize it this time around but struggled to explain what had changed as the case was "very complex".

When police found the caravan last September a 22-year-old man was arrested but later released without charge after he produced evidence he had bought it in good faith from a man in a pub.

Officers sought legal advice and sent the couple a letter explaining they could not seize it for a number of reasons, including a consideration that children were living in it.

Kath McClelland admitted she had to take some responsibility for not insuring the caravan

Mrs McClelland, who admitted she had to take some responsibility for not insuring the vehicle, said she was happy police had done all they could after a meeting with officers.

She has declined to comment any further on the matter.

A police spokeswoman said the force was sorry for the distress caused and the way it had kept the couple informed of developments.

She added: "We have met with Mr Curry and Mrs McClelland and discussed with them in detail the complexities of the police powers and legal position in relation to this case.

"We are aware of the public's concern but this was a unique set of circumstances and we remain committed to protecting our communities.

"A key part of [the] inquiry is to locate the caravan and return it to its legal owners."

Seems to me that everyone has rights other than the ordinary man in the street.
Be a pikey steal a caravan...................... it's alright just tuck your kids up in bed
Stone and threaten 2 charity walkers..........no arrests.
Serve a child the food they ask for ..............you get the sack and are deemed racist.
Walk past a woman in a Burka and remark "Disgusting".................you're arrested and charged with racism.
It's time for the man in the street to speak up for himself !!!

          Mixed feeling on this one.
          1) Caravan something which spends 50 weeks of year on drive and 2 weeks being towed round country side

          2) It's a garden shed on wheels

          3) 'worth' ?30K my arse, why not knock 30K off your morgate insted?

          4) Not insured, get a life, should have been concred to the ground in that case

          5) Civial matter, well they can go tow it back home no worrys

          6) found on a caravan site, was the fuzz looking for it, or did it just
          jump out at them?

          7) Man in a pub.

Psst wana buy a caravan, no keys, work ?30K worth at least ?10K, yeah sure
          here it is

' Evidencse' bet he got his Mom to write it out

          8) why did they not clamp it there and then?

          9) Stolen car your in sir, your nicked for possable handing stolen goods

          10) travles site, so in a field near hampshire, was they listening to 'Pulp' on the radio?

Furious: Police are unable to retrieve Kathleen McLelland and Michael Curry's stolen ?30,000 caravan because officers have no legal powers to remove a traveller family now living in it

I realy feel sorry for the couples who have spend over ?30,000 and they did not get help.

Receipt of stolen goods is a crime. Don't the police know their job?

So if my car gets stolen, driven round the corner and the thief beds down in it for the night, or week or month, does that make it OK?

So what we are saying here is,,, the owners of this caravan are not human,,,, human rights at its best, if you ask me police are more concerned with traffic fines than anything else.

Its a disgusting scenario if it was a car it would have been taken and returned the same as anything else

I have a little sympathy with the police though as it is a little more complex and the fact that it is being lived in makes it similar too Squatters rights

You cant really turf them out, even though there story will be pure BS, as bad as it is the onus is now on the Victims of crime to take them to court to get back their van

Who said crime doesn't pay? and tbh it will probably fuel more caravan thefts, as all you will have to do is say you bought it in a pub and live in it

                Its all wrong

Err no. Bescause it wasn't insured, it must be decleared sorn, it would be been impounded then crushed if no fine paid after xxx days, with pounds fees of ?34674758765868

                    OFF TOPIC:-

Mate worke up to find car nicked from outside house, rings fuzz, reports it not lost, not missing, but stolen

day or so later gets call at 6 am, well he's off line like any normal person, 9 am, fuzz ring again.

"We have found your car" "Great where is it, i'll go fetch it with the trailer"

"It's at Meat-City-Recovery LTD" - he rings them up

"Yeah want your car back ?120+VAT for towing and storage, pal"

Not his fault, not his call, but he had no choice but to pay.

I never thought a trailer with 4 wheels or a caravan with no engine (Brake hose power) need to be taxed and insured otherwise the old bill will crash it, I could be wrong meaty.

On the topic ***8230;. With new rules if some 1 have entered your house or caravan and found him snoring the owner has a right to kick him out, why call the old bill

She was a dinner lady she made a mistake and sacking her was a bit heavy-handed.

Suppose a dinner lady accidently give sckool kids glass of beer and say I realiesed it was a mistake Is she half a sleep when serving sckool kids?
