New driving fines for traffic offences now enforceable

From today motorists found driving carelessly will face steeper new driving fines

New driving fines come into force today, meaning motorists who drive carelessly will face harsher penalties if they are caught.

A set of new on-the-spot fines have been introduced for various driving offences, including tailgating and hogging the middle lane. These offences will now result in a ?100 fine, falling under the careless driving penalty.

Police will also be able to fine drivers who do not give way at a T-junction or who use the wrong lane on a roundabout.

New fines for other driving offences have also been introduced, with the amount careless drivers have to pay, being raised across the board. The new penalties are as follows:

    1. Failing to give way, wrongfully stopping on hard shoulder, obscuring the number plate, misuse of headlights, sounding the horn at night: ?50 fine
    2. Using a mobile phone while driving, speeding, reversing on the motorway, not stopping at a red light: ?100 fine and points on your licence
    3. Having no tax disc, not wearing a seat belt, driving without an MoT: ?100 fine
    4. Failure to identify driver: ?200 fine and points on your licence
    5. Driving without insurance: ?300 fine and points on your licence

Although offenders will still be able to contest fines and points through the courts system, the government hopes that these new, higher fines will allow police to deal with careless driving without sending cases before the judge.

I asked my MP to vote to f**k the motorist over, but he said they were already busy doing that and so he didn't need my suggestions.

And that's exactly what 80% of drivers will end up doing.

If I got pulled for tailgating the moron who's hogging the second or third lane, but the moron didn't.... Off to court I go.

If the lane hoggers are retrained/removed there will be no tail gating.

I've be educating the morons with poor lane discipline on roundabouts for years. Can't wait to see someone done for it.

At a T junction the person joining has to give way to traffic already on the road. Unless it's a taxi, Qashqai or Juke.. who seem to have the god given right to do whatever they want.

Lane hogging is my pet hate.. but a tail gating is caused because of these morons hogging the lane at the first place..

Come off it, just because some little old dude knows no better and cruises the middle lane does not give anybody the right to intimidate him, I hate lane hogs as much as the next bloke but tail gating out of frustration is plain stupid, with possible lethal consequences,
He brakes out of fear, you rear end him and poor little southpaw family in the car behind you get involved and have there annual trip to Brighton ruined, with a detour to the hospital to boot, by some tw@ who won't go around the old dude!

I agree.. dony get me wrong.. either shoudnt happen.. just really pointing out the root cause..

The whole fine thing is stupid because.. there will be some innocent folk who would get fined simply because it was someone else's fault..

I reckon if they fined both the hogger and the tail gater then it would be fair..

PS. Agree with jumping lanes on a round about.. what a joke..

Bull****! The root cause is the sheer moronic stupidity of the tailgater.
He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

It's won't affect most of the cyclists in the UK that I've seen at all, they don't think the law applies to them anyway. Nor do the police who happily sit there and watch them go through red lights etc and almost get mown down - still that's an insurance problem, why bother to apply the law when you can ignore it and give tickets to motorists, much more profitable.
