Shoppers are to face a 5p charge on bags handed out at supermarkets and major stores, Nick Clegg will announce at the Liberal Democrat conference.

The cash raised from the levy, to be introduced in 2015, will be given to environmental charities. The move will bring England into line with Wales and Northern Ireland, where a 5p-a-bag charge is in force since 2011.

Wales has seen a 76 per cent fall in plastic bag use since the introduction. A ?bag tax? will also come into operation in Scotland next year.

"Nick Clegg had to fight pretty hard in government to deliver this when everything is about the cost of living," a senior Lib Dem source said.

Supermarkets will be forced to charge their customers for disposable carrier bags under plans for a new green levy drawn up by Gordon Brown. They will be given a year to end their reliance on single-use plastic bags or face a legal requirement to introduce a charge and reveal how much it raises.


The Prime Minister will introduce legislation next month to impose a charge of 5p or even more on all giveaway bags next year if they fail to comply. And today he throws his weight behind the Daily Mail's landmark "Banish the Bags" campaign with an impassioned plea to retailers.

we have had that here in southern ireland for many years and it has made a difference,i might get 1 plastic bag a month as when i do shopping i use a folding crate and shopping markets also sell bags for life.they come in all sizes the folding crates i prefare the stronger ones.

maybe its a good thing as plastic takes many years to break down and how many trees are covered in bags,a lot less now than before.

they should also do paper shopping bags free so you dont have to buy plastic.

for meat plastic bags are free and would imagine when you buy loose fruit and veg is also free but is meant at the checkout when you are filling up 12 plastic bags you will be charged extra for 12.

The other downside to this is; what charities get from the sale of plastic bags the government will reduce the amount of money it gives the charities leaving it free to waste the money elsewhere.

You beat me to saying that, at least since 2008 if not before.

Thing is you cycle to work because the city you live in is such a shitehole, even the MP doesn't want to have anything to do with the place.

So you cycle to work, but sometimes, you think, bugger need a ???? from Tesco.com and pop in grab a whatever see something else, you have no choice but to get a bag.

As for earlier Tesco bags, in my shed i have a shelf full of nuts, bolts, screws and looks like confetti, tesco bages disintergrate, no good for long time reuse.

99/100 bags i get from supermarket are reused, so they should shove the chrage wheer some don't shine.

You also have to think about the thick 24 year old, guy who gets out of bed at 5:20AM cycles 3 miles to work, spends 12 hours stood up making placstic bags, at Meat-City Plastics Ltd, then cycles home 3 miles and not only don't stop talking to a passing DK VIP member, but manages to out cycle him! Will he strill have a job?

The problem banning the bags so you can use reuseble ones is most people don't wash the reuseble ones. If you don't wash them they can carry disease from carrying meat like chicken. It's funny how liberals think they know what is best but never thing things thru.

I don't know how they rap meat in the UK but here in the US they use styrofoam bottom and plastic wrap. Sometimes they leak. In California some people got sick cause they didn't wash their reusable bags. I guess i don't mind reusable bags ( I never use them ) but instead of forcing them on you they should let you choose what you want to use and get rid of the bag that no one uses.

that was back in the 80s remember the styrofoam and clingfilm,brittle and kept on breaking,thought the usa was out of that age,looking at a meat container i opened for pork chops was plastic and strong sealed clear plastic top both recyclable and even the rib eye comes vacuumed packed in bag then sealed into container and this was from a local butcher,all carried in a very large paper bag.
