Clegg against ban on full veil

It is not "appropriate" for students to wear a full veil in the classroom or for people to go through airport security with their faces covered, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said.

But Mr Clegg said he did not want to see a state ban on the wearing of religious items of clothing in particular circumstances.

His comments came as a Liberal Democrat minister said the Government should consider banning Muslim girls and young women from wearing the veil in public places.

Home Office minister Jeremy Browne called for a national debate on whether the state should step in to prevent young women having the veil imposed upon them. His intervention was sparked by a row over the decision by Birmingham Metropolitan College to drop a ban on the wearing of full-face veils amid public protests.

Mr Browne said he was "instinctively uneasy" about restricting religious freedoms, but he added there may be a case to act to protect girls who were too young to decide for themselves whether they wished to wear the veil or not.

We take great pride in the United Kingdom's values of individual freedom and freedom of religion and any attempt by illiberal male politicians to dictate to Muslim women what they should wear will be challenged." He added: "I call on the Liberal Democrats to disown these illiberal comments from Jeremy Browne and ensure that no government with Lib Dem participation introduces this stupid Bill.

If they fail to do this then they will face the consequences at the next general election from Muslim voters. We would expect these sorts of comments from the far right and authoritarian politicians and not from someone who allegedly believes in liberal values and freedom."

I agree with the ban. I think it is highly inappropriate that people should be allowed to wear full veils in any place where any other British citizen or foreign visitor for that matter would be made to remove a motorcycle crash helmet. All religious countries where veils are required to be worn by women expect foreign visitors to ignore their own religious beliefs and follow the religious beliefs of the country they are visiting and wear a veil.
What's good for the goose is all I can say.

In free society you are (allowed) and they look pretty, I see nothing wrong when we allowed sing to wear turban instead of helmet because of there belief simple.

They shouldn't wear them in classrooms because they could be using them to hide the fact that they're eating sweets. They can eat sweets at playtime. They're abusing the system and hiding behind religion to do so.

They are only going kill themselves by not wearing a helmet. I have never heard of anyone sneaking out the country because they were wearing a turban. The same can't be said for a full Face veil. I can see your point though and in my opinion that shouldn't be allowed either. As far as I'm concerned you should live by the laws of the country you are in or find another country. Other countries don't take it easy on foreign drug smuggler's when they are caught. So I say draw a line and stick to it then shove it down the shirt of the government to give them enough backbone to stand up to anyone who breaks the laws of our country.

Oddly enough when I've been out on the bike and pulled in for petrol some assistants have insisted that I remove my crash helmet. At that point unless i really do need the fuel I get on my bike and go. As long as people can walk around in balaclava's when going to the bank, or marching in an orderly fashion in protest, or going into a police station, boarding a plane or even running around Belfast then they can continue to wear their veil. However if people can't wear balaclava's under the circumstances above, can they wear a veil instead????

100, 0000000 years ago we had nothing to put on, now we have lots of cotton and going to get ban for wearing it, boarder agency can detect who you are from miles away its all stupid rumours I hear from people, I will give you 1 example a lad next street from me bought a bike in the evening and he did not have a helmet but wanted to go to work in the morning so he decided to put a turban but the old bill stopped him and niked him because he is no a Singh does that makes any sense

, u never see a veil when they want to get into the country ?

Know somebosy who worked at an airport on security, couple were going on Vacation from Ingland to Endia or somewhere, she had this balacarva thing on, passpost photo showed full avatiar, but refused so show it to him, he offered to grab a female member of staff, to said the avatair matched the passport, they declinded, walked off and didn't catch that or any other flight out.
