Smoking Ban Considered For Prison Inmates

Inmates could soon be banned from smoking inside prisons in England and Wales, the Ministry of Justice has said.

A pilot scheme which will monitor how prisoners react to the move is being planned by the Government but sites have not yet been chosen.

A spokesman for the MoJ said: "We are considering banning smoking across the prison estate and as part of this are looking at possible sites as early adopters."

The pilot scheme is expected to launch in the South West in the spring of next year and if successful the ban would be rolled out across all prisons within 12 months, The Times newspaper has reported.

But there are fears the ban could cause disruption in prisons, with around 80% of inmates in England and Wales believed to smoke, according to the NHS.

I have also heard that lighting up will be outlawed at all 123 jails in England and Wales ***8211; even outside in the exercise yards, I think we are going to see lots of riot.
This was the issue I was afread of where do we draw the line, niqab ban, prison smoking ban, etc, are we now been controlled as being under the age of 16 our political will teach us how to behave in this world by force?

I think it's a great idea. Let the scum suffer. Most smoking addiction is in the mind anyway and after a couple of weeks the effects are non existant. They won't have the temptation of walking past a bunch of people outside the pubs stinking of cats pis@ and twiglets to bring back the urge and the money they save could be used to pay for the upkeep of their accomodation.

It's about time. Workers can't smoke in the workplace, normal people can't smoke in any public area that's covered...so why has it taken so long for prisons to catch on.

If I had it my way, our prisons would be modeled on those from 3rd world countries. Proper scum & squalor.

I'd go even further. Instead of giving cash aid to Third World countries I'd employ them to build prisons in their country to their standards; then ship our prisoners that commit serious crimes over and pay them to look after them. That way we give them jobs instead of money for those in charge to syphon off and it would be a fraction of the cost of keeping them here.

Aye why not charge them rent for the luxury accommodation, maybe ?29 a night same as premier inn?, while you're at it? Maybe ?25 per meal on top of that, soon have the prisons making a profit so they can be sold on to G4S at pennies. To save even more money you could have some of the cells as long term hospital beds and have the prisoners trained as nurses - which would help to close down more hospitals. I'm sure there'll be some skilled murders in there that can be retrained as surgeons.

Almost forgot, single person accommodation - lots of 1 bedroomed places to save them taking up social housing and paying bedroom tax *shrug*

Personally I think some people need to look up "schadenfreude" in a dictionary and work out if it applies to them.
