Bonfire Night Warning As Firefighters Strike

Firefighters in England and Wales will go on strike this evening after negotiations on pay and pensions broke down, despite today likely being one of the busiest days of the year for the fire service.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) will walk out from 6.30pm to 11pm, and again for two hours from 6am next Monday - the day before Bonfire Night.

The union went on strike last month but called off another stoppage when a deal appeared to be in sight.

But officials said the Government and fire employers failed to offer guarantees on jobs or pensions as a result of changes to the pension age from 55 to 60.

FBU general secretary, Matt Wrack, said: "It is ludicrous that after two years of negotiations the Government has still not sorted out this mess.

            top ten jobs for pensions
            look at the top 2

            1. Politicians

While most occupations have seen their pension schemes become less generous in the last few years, MPs have benefited from a change in the way their pensions are built up, switching from a scheme entitling them to 1/50th of their final salary for each year in office to one offering 1/40th.

This means it only takes 26 years, rather than 33 years, to build up the maximum two-thirds pension. This is funded by some ?2.5 million a year of taxpayers' money.
            Typical retirement income:
After 26 years, an MP can expect to retire on ?40,045 a year (based on a current salary of ?60,675), a minister of state ?65,939 (salary ?99,908) and the prime minister, ?123,823 (salary ?187,611).
            2. Firefighters

Firemen and women enjoy a final salary scheme, although what they are entitled to depends on whether they are members of the old scheme (closed to new members in April 2006) or the new scheme.
Under the old scheme, in return for an annual contribution of 11%, members can enjoy a full pension of two-thirds of their salary from the age of 50, providing they have put in at least 30 years' service. New scheme members still enjoy generous benefits, paying in less - 8.5% rather than 11% - but they will need to work until age 60 with 40 years' service to get the full two-thirds pension.
            Typical retirement income:
A firefighter retiring now on ?27,000 with 30 years' service can expect two-thirds of their income - ?17,800 - at age 50. However, a 20-year-old joining the service will need to work until 60 to enjoy the same pension.

Yeah, would you want to be dressed up in a duffel coat that's thicker than Paddington Bears, with a bit of cork plonked on your head, then a pressurised gas cyclinder on you back with a label saying "Warranty Void if exposed to heat in excess of 50 Deg C

Then on the way to the job, you have an annoying siren, then the ride reminds you of a bicycle with a bucket of water on the handle bars.

Then you have to deal with people sniffling and crying whilst your trying to cause as much damage as possable to get their car open.

EXPECTING THIS LINE TO BE EDITED OUT BY ADMIN:-

Google something like 'trapped in car with dead friend on top'

If you find the video, the cars well bent. Do you want to be a fire man and/or woman

Got to be honest, although I managed to get my fire out last year just as they arrived, they did a great job of checking the house and garden to make sure nothing was left burning or likely to burn - great bunch. However I'm really not sure that making them work until 60, same for ambulance drivers, paramedics, police offices etc, would be of any benefit. Can you imagine a 60 year old trying to tackle a blaze, or arrest anybody, pick someone up in an ambulance?

It's designed to make them take early retirement on much less pension due to a 40% to 50% reduction in their pension because 'they chose to retire before 60' and so 'costs' less - nothing more, nothing less, maybe I'm just a cynic *shrug*

I'm sure we'll find out once the first 59 year old police officer/fire office/paramedic or whatever gets seriously hurt or worse, and the government of the day refuse compensation (or cry about the cost) due to them being too old to do their job anyway.

Just another example of cuddly caring Conservative government.
