Gurkha breaks hunger strike after Britain launches inquiry

A former Gurkha has ended a two-week hunger strike after British MPs launched a probe into pension and other rights for the Nepalese soldiers.

Gyanraj Rai, 55, had been camped out opposite Prime Minister David Cameron's Downing Street office in London threatening to starve himself to death.

Earlier this week around 1,000 ex-Gurkhas who served with the British army marched past Downing Street to highlight their call for better pension, benefits and health care rights.

Conservative MP Rob Wilson brokered a deal between campaigners and parliamentarians to end the protest.

A cross-party commission will take written and oral evidence before reporting its findings, which will be considered by the government next year.

Actress Joanna Lumley, a fervent supporter of the Gurkhas' cause, gave Rai a glass of fruit juice with which he broke his hunger strike.

The Gurkhas are brave Nepalese who are proud to serve in our military services and have achieved outstanding performances as a military unit with many having sacrificed their lives and so should deserve to be treated with decency, honour and pride.
But our government sees fit to treat them worse than a newly arrived Roma gypsy.....................Shame on them !!!

The Gurkhas have served Britain since 1815 and during that time Gurkha regiments have been awarded 26 Victoria Crosses. During World War I (1914–18), more than 200,000 Gurkhas served in the British Army, suffering approximately 20,000 casualties, and receiving almost 2,000 gallantry awards and during World War II (1939-45) a total of 250,280 Gurkhas served in 40 battalions, fighting in Syria, North Africa, Italy, Greece and against the Japanese in the jungles of Burma, northeast India and also Singapore. They did so with considerable distinction, earning 2,734 bravery awards in the process and suffered around 32,000 casualties.
They have evoked quotes such as " Bravest of the brave most generous of the generous, never had a country more faithful friends than you." from Professor Sir Ralph Lilley Turner and ""If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha." from Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
After service most Gurkhas return to Nepal and receive smaller pensions than their British counterparts. The nationality status of Gurkhas and their families was also an area of dispute and some of those ex-army Gurkhas and their Nepali families who stayed on in Britain were denied residency and forced to leave Britain, this despite the fact they had chosen to serve Britain and put their lives on the line.
I know who I would prefer to be residents in this country and who deserve it !!!

I think you need to get yourself a dictionary and look up the definition of blackmail SJ.
He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.
