Press Association - Theresa May wants to strip jihadists fighting in Syria of their British nationality


Theresa May has hiked up the use of powers to strip jihadists fighting in Syria of their British nationality, it has emerged.

Up to 240 Britons are believed to be in Syria and the Home Secretary has targeted 20 dual-nationals this year using "deprivation of citizenship orders", which take immediate effect.

It marks a rapid increase in the use of the powers, which had only previously been deployed 17 times in two and a half years, records uncovered by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and published in The Independent show.

Almost all of the orders made this year, which do not need judicial approval, were issued while the jihadists were overseas, it found.

The Home Office said: "Citizenship is a privilege, not a right, and the Home Secretary will remove British citizenship from individuals where she feels it is conducive to the public good to do so."

Benjamin Ward, deputy director of Human Rights Watch Europe and Central Asia Division, said: "If there is a national security dimension to the stripping of citizenship and if that is something that would be known to the other country of nationality, then that would give rise to concern.

"It's obviously very important that in looking at these issues the Government complies with its human rights obligations."

Our govt has got to get turf of this sort of lunatics people, most of them on dole and free housing they want to go and fight in the foreign country while our govt supporting the family left behind, all those fighters should be banned from returning to UK and the families should be deported and assets taken away.
Britain need hard working people to work in the factories to get our country back on its feet.

One which you have no proof of and just post it around as if you know them and know that most of them are on the dole. Would your use of "most" mean 1999 of the 200 or 1 of the 200?

Link to an interesting load of statistics about immigrants in this country. They (immigrants) contribute to the wealth of this country and pay more in taxes than they take out in benefits. It also has some startling stats about immigrants compared to those born in the UK.

There should defintaely still be some control of immigrants such as they do in Canada and Australia and they show that controlled immigration works. Sayint that though, if we start to control immigration we are left with the headache that we have to control emmigration, and a lot of people have temporary migration in the summer working in Greece, Spain, Turkey, Cyprus etc...... Do we stop them all going away if we are stopping Romanians coming to our country? A difficult headache.

However who's to say their wives and families aren't working, or that they are the sons of people who are working. I stand on what I said, no 1 can afford to go to another country to fight from Europe without some kind of handout, how can families pay bills, rent, council tax, education, shopping just can not be done unless every families are working in that case our govt has no rights to send the family were they came from, time will tell.

Two Flemish cities have decided to penalise presumed Belgian jihadists, currently fighting alongside rebels in Syria, by depriving them of the social benefits they enjoyed as citizens of Belgium.

Belgian jihadists who travel to Syria to fight against President Bashar al-Assad’s troops are now being penalised by their home country’s government.

According to Belgian media reports on August 19, the Flemish cities of Antwerp and Vilvoorde have indeed deleted 29 such presumed jihadists from lists of individuals receiving social benefits from the state.

The official reason given for the move was that these people no longer lived at their registered address.

Investigations carried out by city authorities found that the presumed jihadists had been accessing their Belgian savings by withdrawing money from banks in Turkey, just across the Syrian border.

The action taken by the Flemish cities has also resulted, for example, in the suspension of 1,000-euro monthly welfare payments to the wife of one of the men, even though she still lives in Antwerp. The woman’s husband, Sa?d M'Nari, reportedly left Belgium in May as a member of dissolved radical Islamist group Sharia4Belgium, which has been qualified as a terrorist organisation by legal authorities in Antwerp and accused by Interpol of sending fighters to Syria.
