New London black cab is unveiled by Nissan - and it will be fully electric by end of

Car giant Nissan unveiled its new black cab for London today - hailing it as a key ?stepping stone? towards the capital?s first all-electric taxi.

Styled at the firm?s Paddington design studios that also created the top-selling QashQai and Juke models, the new NV200 cab currently has a petrol engine.

But by the end of 2015 it will have a clean, zero-emission electric motor to combat air pollution in UK cities. It remains to be seen whether London - which has not yet hit targets for providing electric vehicles charging points - will be ready too.

That's unusual somebody Tweeted this earlier, not often you seen something before you do on DK.

Gmb mate, lost the link cos i killed a pc, but basically 1910 electric vehicles were REALLY common

go on ebay and if your sad look at postcards of electric vechiles

      |No idea what happened to them

      OFF TOPIC:-

If you have an electric heater 1KW fine, sake of argument 1 bucket of coal is 1KW but the POLISH bloke in power station has to shovel 3 buckets of coal in for your 1 KW out.

So it is better to burn your own 3 buckets of coal.

      ON TOPIC:-

All your doing with fully electric is shifting polution to the power stations.

Now IN THERORY you could safly have a nuclear car, would have to be size of a rolls royce and built like a tank, but would ALWAYS be warm in winter and cool in summer, NEVER flat batterys

Fit gps to them all to slow them down near accident sites etc etc

Don't you find it rather strange, Nelson Mandella dies then a few weeks later Nissan revel a 'person carrier' that's black and looks like a hearse!

              Funny that

I guess one cab driver would need a fleet to himself. So he can keep driving when one is charging. What is going to make the electric?

It never happened but had my eye on an OLD OLD electric forklift no batterys

was going to take the motor fir the hydrlics replace with 240 volt motor. Then ise that motor on another motor in reverse to make the 72volts it needed

then run iff the mains oowt

Does electricity grow on trees now then? Maybe it will have zero emission but that will be made up for by pollution generating the electricity. Perhaps they shoudl erect a few thousand wind farms in London to support the elecetcity required, since the power companies are already saying we're close to capacity for the current needs, did they not. I seem to recall warnings of brownouts not so long back. Where's the joined up thinking in all of this, although that doesn't make for good profits.

Add to that London and other cities forcing people to have electric taxi's (TFL got shares in Nissan or is Boris looking for a job there when he eventually gets kicked out?) then there'll soon be no capacity for heating and lighting in winter for consumers. I dare say someone will have the bright idea of rasing the energy prices to deter consumers form using the energy so that taxi's can have it cheap... so consumers won't be able to afford electricity anyway.

Back to the wind farms, placed in London since they will need the energy and it will be locally generated then won't it, rather than teh rest of teh UK having to put up with air pollution caused by higher demand for coal/gas fired power stations. Failing that a nuclear power station somewhere in Westminster to supply the energy needs of taxi's...

You forgot to mention the damage caused to the environment during the mining, processing & shipping of the materials needed for the batteries.

Electric cars don't work. The reason they are doing this cause some government people have friends who make or are heavily invested in the making of the cars. It doesn't matter if it works or fails they will get guarantee money cause the friends in the government will mandate it with a law.
