Move to ban smoking in family cars

Shadow public health minister Luciana Berger said the party intends to force a vote on an amendment to the Children and Families Bill in the House of Lords which it is tabling later today.

If it succeeds in getting the measure on to the statute book, it would make it an offence for drivers of private vehicles to fail to prevent smoking when a child is present.

Ms Berger said that almost 500,000 children in England were exposed to Labour is seeking to impose a ban on smoking in cars while children are present.

potentially toxic levels of second-hand smoke in family cars every week.

Fair point if they can also stop parents smoking in the house, that means our govt will be installing CCTV in every house to catch the offenders not convince yet, in Emerica people are smoking cannabis which is now legalised while we are still talking rubbish.

FFS don't give the government any ideas or excuses They already film you teh second you setp outside the door, monitor all you telephone calls, monitor you internet and read all our emails. Last thing we want now is for them to have an excuse to stick a CCTV in your house.

Perhaps someone will invent a roof rack to put the kids on!
You can smoke in the car if you like, kids get free fresh air, no distraction from the kids while driving...its a winner idea

It's a sad state of affairs that they've got to even think of introducing the ban. What kind of person would even think of smoking in an enclosed space with kids in it ? I'm happy for them to kill themselves and screw their health up but why should it be forced on innocent people.

Gynaecologist madam I have good news and bad news?
The good news is your up the duff congratulations!
The bad news is the police are outside in the waiting room to arrest you for harming your unborn child because the blood test indicate you've been smoking recently!

Logical conclusion Look like we're heading in the direction that miscreants will be sterilised for their own good
Much that I'm against smoking this is too much nanny state inteference!!!

Why not make it even better and tie that up with the part of making it so that it's illegal for children to be in a car? Would save them moaning about kids getting lifts to school and no exercise. Much better all round

Are you sure this isn't just going to be an excuse to random stop cars and ask for the ID's of anyone them deem may be under 16?

Wouldn't it just be easier to stop selling tobacco? Problem solved at source.

Yes, it would help in the same way that chemists were stopped from 'prescribing' it to anyone who happened to be passing and had a good excuse to want some. However, like the motorist, your average smoker and drinker contibute a very large amount in taxation - so they'll keep selling tobacco, raising more money and putting restrictions on when/where it can be smoked. This smacks of another useless piece of legislation that won't be enforced. For instance we know as fact that drink drivers kill people, yet we still allow people to drive after having a drink because they pay money to do so.

Agreed. So many things that are wrong in this country but all the gov't are interested in is getting more money in to pay for things they got wrong.
