UK set to take in 'hundreds' of Syria refugees

Some of the "most vulnerable" Syrian refugees will be temporarily resettled in the UK, Deputy PM Nick Clegg says.

He said girls and women who had been victims of or were at risk of sexual violence, torture victims, and elderly and disabled people would get priority.

This meant the coalition was ensuring Britain's "long and proud tradition of providing refuge" lived on, he said.

The government expects the number of refugees accepted to be in the hundreds but has not set a specific target.

The UK's resettlement programme is to be separate from the ongoing UN High Commissioner for Refugees scheme which has seen Germany commit to admitting 10,000 Syrian refugees and France take 500.

Home Secretary Theresa May is expected to spell out more details of the government's plan to MPs later.

On another note the Tories and UKIP must be so disappointed that they have made the UK so bad that the Bulargians and Romanians don't want to come here so that UKIP and the Tories can back up their claims from late last year.

I feel sorry for these people; we are a small already overcrowded island!!! There is plenty of room in other larger oil rich countries near Syria ,after all these oil rich countries speak the same language and have far more money to sort these problems out, and why these people are camping on the boarders they should be re-housed in Saud and Irraq, Irann, and what about the 1 Million illegal immigrants we can't get rid of???

I agree with you on that. However I do recall the last time that all the Arabs tried to fit into Palestine that the Israeli kicked their rear ends out in around 6 days and they failed to get in. Something about expired visa's I believe, though why a credit clearing house is involved is beyond the scope of this post.
