Jamaica Pushes Forward With Decriminalizing Marijuana

Jamaica will this year join a virtual tidal wave of countries across the globe in decriminalizing ganja, the forerunner to the establishment of a medicinal marijuana industry estimated to be worth billions of dollars.

The undertaking was given to the Cannabis Commercial and Medicinal Research Task force by Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives Phillip Paulwell, according to one of the main task force leaders, Delano Seiveright.

In a press statement yesterday, Seiveright said Paulwell, who is also the minister of science, technology, energy and mining, told members of the task force at a meeting last Thursday that ?ganja will be decriminalized in Jamaica this year and emphasized that Jamaica cannot be allowed to be left behind on the issue.?

?He also reiterated the multiple economic, social and cultural benefits that Jamaica stands to gain if the laws are adjusted sooner, rather than later,? Seiveright said.

He said officials at the meeting, held at the PCJ Auditorium in Kingston, had agreed to the formal launch of the Future Ganja Growers Association next month to spearhead the establishment of a local ganja industry, which advocates believe will pump billions of dollars into the Jamaican economy.

If Paulwell?s promise becomes reality ? a strong possibility because of bipartisan support in the Parliament ? Jamaica could be the first English-speaking Caribbean country to decriminalize ganja and usher in a new era, allowing Jamaicans to grow marijuana for medicinal purposes under State regulation.

Legalization or decriminalization of the weed has been sweeping the globe, led by the United States where Colorado, followed by Washington state, has demonstrated the earning power of marijuana. America?s tax take has already been put at an estimated US$100 million a year.

Jamaica?s Cannabis Commercial and Medicinal Research Task force comprises the Ganja Law Reform Coalition, the National Alliance for the Legalization of Ganja and several members of civil society. The group is chaired by University of the West Indies, Mona Principal Professor Archibald McDonald. Other leading Ganja Law Reform advocates sitting on the task force include Paul Chang and Paul Burke.

The task force also reiterated that a compulsory condition of involvement in the growers? association was agreement by members not to take any part, directly or indirectly, in the growing or cultivation of ganja until there is a legal and regulated framework in place.

The association, according to the press statement, would ?represent the best interests of the various stakeholders, giving primacy of place to the traditional ganja cultivator for a specified period?.

It would lobby the Jamaican government for the establishment of ?a properly regulated cannabis industry in all aspects, cultivation, agro-processing, medicinal and its many and varied byproducts?; and promote control, education and taxation ?as important planks of a regulated cannabis industry.?

So just because education is available, regulation can take place and the government can make money off it it's ok? I fail to see how any UK government can do any of those things while demonising smokers, since other than making cakes with it there's not much you can do without smoking it really. Funny how doctors back smoking cannabis when they are against smoking cigs *shrug* me I'd make smoking illegal as well but of course they won't - there's taxation to make.

You don’t have to smoke it, i ve not smoked for years. You can get vaporisers portable and static one, you can make cannabis oil, you can even absorb it via patches on your skin. You can make rope ,plastic, oil, clothes, food(extremely nutritious and easy to grow in the third world).
The world is changing towards cannabis and the lies that have been used in the propaganda against cannabis are now being dispelled. The change is coming fast. The USA have several more states in the process of getting bills passed for medical/recreational usage.Uruguay has now become the first country with a legal cannabis market with many more looking to follow there example.

I'm all for medicinal cannabis where it is for health reasons as it is a treatment. As for smoking it surely that's just for those without the get up and go to get a life. I've a few mates that smoke and everyone of them can't be arsed doing anything, they've lost all get up and go and in some cases are paranoid. As for a tidal wave of Countries I don't think a few States makes a tidal wave.

Cambodia,Switzerland,Portugal,USA,Argentina,Brazil ,Mexico,Netherlands,Spain,Czech rep,Israel have all ready decriminalised or passed bills to allow personal use.The EU is set to vote next year, parts of Australia are debating medical cannabis Morocco is said to be watching with a view to change the law,South Africa are debating new legalisation for medical usage the list goes on.
As you can see its far more than a few states the whole world seems to be changing it attitude. This is all thanks to some pot heads getting of the arses and doing something about a subject that matters to them.

But decriminalising it makes it available for anyone, not just the ill (that that depends on your definition of ill really.....) If it can only be prescribed by doctors for those that are ill then that's fine, since they surely won't be asking people to smoke it - we demonise people who smoke. However we all know it won't be for medical puporses, unless absolute boredom is an illness as well. I do hope that the police have their test kits ready for drugged drivers.

UNCONFIRMED rumor statez if fuzz stops you they can only test for drink or drugs not both.

so if you get pulled and you been drinking, say you been smoking, green, then they
do drug test passed, end if states rumor, then vice versa, just dont fo birh

I think judging by this list of Countries where it is legal as opposed to turning a blind eye to it I'll not need my life jacket for a while. Legality of cannabis by country - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The next thing we need proof of is was it the pot heads or Government/medical professionals who pushed for medicinal cannabis ?

Decriminalising would mean its technically illegal, but you won’t be charged unless you take the piss(walking around with a 9 bar and a blow lamp for example). This is the attitude holland and portugal have taken and seems to work well for them .Doctors would never encourage smoking in any form, medical cannabis is nearly always taken in the form of oil(the plant is washed through high proof alcohol with dissolves the THC when the alcohol evaporates it leaves oil) either orally or applied direct to skin cancer.A lot of MS suffers are reduced to smoking cannabis as oil is way to expensive to make (needs large amounts of bud) decriminalising would allow people to grow enough plants to make there own oil, as well as the type of cannbis they wish to use indica or saliva. Some have high THC some have virtually none just high levels of cannabinoids(which don’t have the high effect). There will be a lot of cannabis dealers (chavs) going bust, plus the quality(not strength) to which i mean no chemical pesticides or fertiliser just good old organic weed as Jah made it.
I do hope the police do take there test kits and are ready for drugged drivers not just cannabis smoker but prescription drug drivers as well.
It has been a very big push buy what you may call pot heads over the last few years. i myself have been very active in this campaign. The government have been very obstructive in legalising cannabis(they put you in bloody jail) backed by the large pharmacological companies, who see cannabis as a threat to there profits(you can’t patent something thats grown for millenniums) but honestly since the change of law in Colorado things seem to be moving very fast.

The problem with using internet research such as wikipedia it only shows what is only relevant today. If you would have looked at the same page 2 years ago you would see a lot more pink but then again. if you look in a years time i would be certain you see more green
