Putin ready to invade Ukraine; Kiev warns of war

MOSCOW/KIEV (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded and won his parliament's approval on Saturday to invade Ukraine, where the new government warned of war, put its troops on high alert and appealed to NATO for help.

Putin's open assertion of the right to send troops to a country of 46 million people on the ramparts of central Europe creates the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.

Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, leading a government that took power after Moscow's ally Viktor Yanukovich fled a week ago, said Russian military action "would be the beginning of war and the end of any relations between Ukraine and Russia".

Acting President Oleksander Turchinov ordered troops to be placed on high combat alert. Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya said he had met European and U.S. officials and sent a request to NATO to "examine all possibilities to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine".

When I first watched demonstration in Kiev I could not believe my eyes it was the Ukranian police could not defend them self from demonstrations, why Yanukovich did not call his army to protect the country from criminals, this criminals want to run the country by force.

So on one hand you have Russia backing Victor Yanukovych who was elected president and on the other hand you have the "west" backing the interim government of the Ukraine who stepped up when Victor Yanukovych fled. To add to it you also have an elected prime minister of an autonamous region, Crimea, asking Russia for help. The interim Ukrainian government refusing to recognise the PM of Crimea. Have the US never sent in their troops to Latin and South American countries that they see as a threat e.g. Grenada, Haiti, Cuba to name but a few? It's going to end up in a stand-off with the west doing very little, if anything other than telling Putin he's a "bad lad and should know better". The west will jump up and down, but eventually accept it as they did with Georgia.

I'd guess that the west will now be assisting the countries bordering Ukraine in shoring up their borders. An ever moving iron curtain by any other name?

No one ever complaint about wars after wars in the middle E, thousands have died why the west are now complaining on this occasion when Russia is doing the same.

You have to remember, it's the year before election and Maggie proved that going to war makes you popular, even if you are a total witch. Cameron and co tried last year with Syria and so want to have a go this year in all their stupidity. Hague has the correct name of someone who sends the cannon fodder out while he sits at home not dying.

Diplomatic, political and economic pressures will be put on Russia to send a "clear message" about its actions in the Ukraine, David Cameron has said.
The prime minister was speaking after Russian forces reportedly set a 03:00 GMT deadline for Ukrainian forces in Crimea to surrender or face attack.
The international community has warned Russia of reprisals if it does not pull its forces back and reduce tensions.
Vladimir Putin has said Russia reserves the right to protect its interests.

Meanwhile, an official document says the UK government will not curb trade with Russia or close London's financial centre to Russians as part of any possible package of sanctions against Moscow.
The document, which was photographed as a senior official carried it into a meeting in Downing Street, says "the UK should not support for now trade sanctions or close London's financial centre to Russians".

BBC News - Ukraine crisis: UK warns Russia over Crimean incursion

Daves going to put everyone else's foot down hard on this one then. "Vladimir, you're a bad lad and I'll be sending Will Hague round to give you a good old thrashing like the ones Cleggy used to give me at Eton!" hmmm I somehow don't think that Putin is too worried since he already knows the UK won't be curbing any trade with Russia over it *shrug*

                            On another note

Europe's biggest stockpiles of natural gas since at least 2009 are damping the threat of any potential disruptions in supplies from Ukraine, the main transit route of Russian fuel to consumers in the west, Bloomberg News reports. It says that the mildest weather since 2008 has reduced demand for the fuel used for heating and to generate electricity and sent prices to their lowest level in two years.
So when are the UK gas companies lowering the price?
