TV licensing- it could be the end

TV licence dodgers may no longer face prosecution in the courts under new plans being considered by the Government.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling says "serious work" on the plan is under way, with more than 100 cross-party MPs in support.

"The Culture Secretary (Maria Miller) and I both agree that this is a really interesting idea, particularly given the pressure on our courts system," Mr Grayling told The Daily Telegraph.

"Our departments will be doing some serious work on the proposal."

Efforts to change the law are being spearheaded by Tory MP Andrew Bridgen.

He said that for some cash-strapped families, the current law was "criminalising them for being poor".

"It is outrageous that so many people are brought into the criminal justice system through this means. I believe that non-payment should be treated in the way that parking tickets are," Mr Bridgen told the newspaper.

"It is absurd that the courts are being clogged up by such a minor offence."

Offenders currently face a ?1,000 fine and a criminal record, as well as possible time in jail if fines are not paid.

Some 180,000 people faced magistrates last year after being accused of not paying the ?145.50 fee, accounting for in excess of one in 10 of all criminal prosecutions.

Of those, 155,000 people were convicted and fined.

The proposed changes could see dodging payment of the TV licence become a civil matter, with a fine set by the Government.

A BBC spokesman said: "Legislation is a matter for the Government. However, changing the law could lead to higher evasion. Just a 1% increase in evasion would lead to the loss of around ?35m, the equivalent of around 10 BBC Local Radio stations."

If this goes ahead it will be a game changer

It would be nice to see what would be the punishment for non payment..

It will be highly likely that when this happens the licence will be told to **** off... and let me watch telly in peace..

So instead of owing the courts and leaving it up to the magistrate on the day as to how much the fine will be it'll be inflated just as they do parking tickets. I can only think that someone in the government has a 'mate' who doesn't make enough by collecting money for parking tickets and needs the extra cash by charging ?50 a visit by the bailiffs *shrug*

Well, we over here in cloud cuckoo land are about to see our tv licence fee abolished to make way for an even more mindboggling 'communications charge' which means that the tv or internet tv or any other kind of 'communication' device will now come under this remit so that the excuse of "I don't watch/have tv" will not cover you anymore.

But it gets even sillier in that even if you don't have an ariel, a phone line or internet connection, in fact, nothing at all, not even a dustbin lid that might pick up a signal..........you still have to pay.

In Greece even dead people have to pay for the TV license. It is customary in Greece to stick a light on people's graves and as the TV license is added to people's electricity bills, dead people pay.

TBH I'd expect them to do go along a similar vein to the coomunications 'tax' instead. That way they get everyone with a mobile phone as well as people they can nail down to a particular address, so will probably more than double the revenue for all the BBC services they're busy closing down. No idea why they'd close BBC3 and not BBC4 and the Parliament channel, the latter 2 being a waste of money anyway.

I'm not too sure about England but here in Scotland the powers of the bailiffs(sheriff officers) are very limited now. If this comes into force a mass social media campaign should be launched urging people to boycott payment. The bbc is a dinosaur and after their harbouring of peodophiles, they should be made extinct by the people.

Well the change may not happen to Scotland if Alex gets you all to vote his way. Though I'm sure Alex will find another way to scam you, perhaps a tax on creation of carbon dioxide and consumption of oxygen?

Much the same in England, with the exception of a High Court Enforcement Officer who is an individual person, who has been authorised by the Ministry of Justice to enforce High Court judgments and so the Officer is acting under the instructions of the Court.
They have been showing a programme down here called Repo Man; showing a bunch of bailiffs recovering cars and houses etc, but the programme made little effort to show the difference between a bailiff and a High Court Enforcement Officer. To my mind it was just to frighten people into paying up, one of the outfits who worked under the name of Donegal were nothing more than a bunch of thugs who broke all the rules of being bailiffs and bullied and lied to all of those it showed having things repossessed.................................but justice did prevail, because they have had their licence suspended by the Office Of Fair Trading "in order to protect consumers."
Mind you there was one instance they showed where there was a couple of High Court Enforcement Officers working but they were only doing an ordinary repossession and so did not have the High Court powers and they "broke in" to a property by way of a window that was unlocked, however as they were only ordinary bailiffs on this job they are not allowed to "force" entry and by opening the closed but unlocked window that is technically what they had done. Had the window actually been open then they would have legally been able to gain entry through the window, but it was closed so they acted illegally.
If anyone has a visit by or is expecting a visit from a bailiff then they should either send them a copy of or display a copy of "Notice of Removal of Implied Rights of Access." The bailiffs are then legally obliged not to call.

When I first had a car we where supposed to have a radio license for each car but as nobody would buy them the BBC gave up and put it in with the tv license in 1969
As the BBC only report what it wants you to know its pro Europe left of centre and its latest smear campaign is against UKIP ,it want to keep the status quo ,2 main partys and the other lot
I think its time the license fee was done away with .I was peed off with the big BBC payoffs for incompetent managers paying people like Ross 18 millions for 3 years as said before covering up for pedos
Its time the BBC had to pay its own way in life with advertising and selling programs and not relying on handouts from the poorest in society

You mean covering up things like this?

The former deputy speaker of the House of Commons sexually abused young men in Parliament and at the Conservative Party conference, a court has heard.
MP Nigel Evans, 56, used his "powerful" influence to attack seven men from 2002 to 2013, Preston Crown Court was told. In 2009, one alleged victim told two Conservative MPs of an assault at Mr Evans' home, the jury heard. The former Tory MP denies one count of rape, two of indecent assault and six of sexual assault.

Mr Evans resigned as deputy speaker in September after he was charged.

BBC News - Nigel Evans trial: MP 'abused young men in Parliament'

High court bailiffs cannot enter your home by force either, they can only enter commercial property by force or your home if you leave a window or door open. once they are in they can then force entry the second time

the only bailiffs who can actually force entry at any time are bailiffs for actual criminal fines or non payment of council tax, vat ect

                              BTW ON TV LICENSE

I actually would prefer to pay for license rather than have all BBC broke up with adverts, i hate them i watch everything delayed just too fast forward the ****ers out
