    Bailiffs to deter benefits cheats

Bailiffs could soon be called in to seize cars, TVs and computers from benefit fraudsters under a new Government drive to deter claimants from fiddling the welfare system.

Downing Street is proposing powers to call in bailiffs to confi****e and sell high-value items to help recoup illicit gains from fraud, estimated to cost taxpayers ?1.2 billion a year.

Powers already exist to dock benefits from those found guilty of fraud, but Prime Minister David Cameron believes that the prospect of losing valuable assets will provide a strong deterrent to cheats.

It is hoped that the threat of the bailiff's knock at the door will encourage fraudsters to make arrangements to pay what they owe.

Essential items and low value goods are unlikely to be taken. A No 10 spokesman said: "Getting the welfare budget under control is a key part of our long-term plan for the economy.

"We want to end the something-for-nothing culture and deliver for people who want to work hard and play by the rules."

Good news that they're doing more to hunt down benefit cheating scumbags.

Bad news that dumb DK software still censors words like 'confi****e;.
He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

I think you'll find that a person has to be found guilty of fraud before things are taken.

Another bullsh*t idea that is announced to get the benefits bashers going !!!
First, bailiffs do not have the power to confi****e anything !!!!! the only ones who can do this are High Court Enforcement Officers and they can only do it when they have been given directions from the High Court.
Secondly, many of the so called "fraudulent claims" are either mistakes made completing ambiguous claims forms or mistakes by the DWP or false claims made after having had their benefits sanctioned.
Then there is always the statements about ending the "something for nothing culture".......................most of those on benefits have been previously employed and were paying their taxes and national insurance which are meant to cover such situations, so where is it "something for nothing" ?????
And of course the statement of the fraud costing the taxpayer ?1.2 Billion a year, but don't say about ?16 Billion of unclaimed benefits not paid out each year or the millions of pounds wasted on failed schemes and systems that have been tried to be initiated.
This is nothing more than headline/vote grabbing of the mis-informed.

Well being a criminal offence should be enough to deter anyone, doubt the bailiffs will deter anyone - what they will do is make a profit by adding on charges. Wonder how many MP's have shares in debt collection agencies.............. *shrug*

I'm all for catching the benefit cheats, but they way they vilify anyone who is unemployed and claiming benefits is outrageous.
The UK benefits payments bill when broken down equates to 2.6% of the total bill paid to the Unemployed, 15.5% to the Sick and Disabled, 18.4% on Family Benefits,20.8% to the Low Income Earners, 42.3% to the Elderly, 0.3% to Widows and 0.1% to "other" claims.
Yet whenever there is a crackdown and any "public campaign" it is against the Unemployed and the Sick and Disabled who are responsible for smaller percentages of the benefits bill.
And as I said before, the amount not paid out to genuine cases that are eligible is over 13 times more than what is paid out to fraudulent claims, I wonder if they would ever consider putting as much effort into informing those people who have not received what they are entitled to ??????

Exactly rds60h couldn't agree more. It right wing rhetoric designed to appeal to the sheep is society who will believe anything that is said and will really believe that it is doing some good, when all it does in reality is boost the ego's of those MP's who spout such sh*t that people believe it. They'll be telling us soon that for the bargain price of paying bailiffs ?200 million a year they'll save paying out ?50 million in benefits *shrug* What they should do is prosecute the minority who abuse the system, not the majority in need of the system. But it doesn't make good headlines now does it.

Still at least there'll be more jobs around as pond scum bailiffs *spit*

oh yeah, that beat up Volvo is a shed, ?50 scrap value, probably cost the poor bassed ?300 in costs when they lifted it.

For anyone on here who has suffered the dreaded "Bailiff's Letter" or any other threat of removal of goods from them, please remember that you have more rights than a Bailiff, unless as I said before the Bailiff is a High Court Enforcement Officer..............................but for that to be the case then you will have had to of been taken to High Court (And I mean High Court, Not County Court - they are completely different !!) and had a judgement against you.
Have a read here :: A Bailiff's Access Rights about the rights you have and the rights the Bailiff has !!
And if you have had a threat of a Bailiff visit, download the template for the " Notice of Removal of Implied Right of Access " complete this with your own details and either send a copy the company threatening to send in the bailiffs, OR , hand it to a bailiff if they call or have it stuck on a window or door where they can see it.
But, whatever you do, DO NOT let them in to your home under any circumstances.
