UN rejects Russian annexation of Crimea

The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted a Western-backed resolution declaring Crimea's breakaway referendum illegitimate and refusing to recognize Russia's annexation of the peninsula.

The non-binding resolution passed with a comfortable majority in the 193-member body, with 100 votes in favor and 11 votes against. But 58 abstained and more than 20 did not vote.

Ukraine, which drafted the resolution, welcomed the adoption of the resolution and called for a "stronger and more concrete" united, international front against Russian aggression.

"I'm very much satisfied with the vote...(an) overwhelming majority of nations in the world supported this resolution," acting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya said.

He had urged the international community to back the text, hoping an overwhelming show of support would ward off further Russian intervention on its territory.

For several centuries," Russian ambas****r Vitaly Churkin told the assembly, Crimea was "an integral part of our country.

"Only an arbitrary decision by the USSR to transfer it to Ukraine upset this natural sate of affairs," he said.

The 11 countries that voted against the text were Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Russia, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

NATO and Western powers voted overwhelmingly in favor. Among the abstentions were Afghanistan, China, India and Pakistan, as well many South American nations.

Israel and Iran were among those that did not vote.

Even if it was for sale on ebay you need security council agreement to park outside your house Meaty!!!!!

Security Council, resolutions in the General Assembly cannot be vetoed but are not legally binding, what a waste of our taxpayers money all over the world what it is worth nothing.

What exactly is the purpose of this toothless meeting in the General assembly when there are countries like Esrail, Korie, ESA, ETC, they can not even put sanctions on them.

Not a problem, perhaps the UN will sort this one out as quick as they did resolution 497 and 478 against a country which annexed another? Sorry but it would appear that just because a resolution is passed by the UN the UK and US do not spring into action in defence of the country in question unless it suits them. Nor does a resolution by a majority in the UN make it illegal, and even if it did they should take it to the security council where the permanent members will decide whether to take action :roflamo: Sorry this time the US and UK will have to sulk, no warmongering with the Russians to make a name for themselves and make it easy for Dave to get re-elected on teh backs of dead servicemen and women.

What was the original purpose to have the UN when it has no power to take action even on the most powerful country like ysa for killing thousands of people by drones?

What happened in Ukraine was unimaginable the new govt take over the country by revolution beating the unarm police officers and the un says Ukrainian is now free, when 528 Egypt protestors have been sentenced to death and further 919 to be sentenced were is the UN?

One mans freedom fighter, another man's terrorist. Robert Mugabe was a terrorist in Rhodesia, now he just runs the place instead hmmm bad example really OK let's take Greneda, oh can't do that either the US said and did that. We could invade Cuba, but even that was a pigs ear Sorry I'm picking up some really bad examples here. Why don't we just invade Peterborough to make up for it?

Oh almost forgot, the "west" supported and armed those nice freedom fighters who took on the Russians, in Afghanistan. I think it involved arming a jolly nice group of freedom fighters against the Russian backed government there, similar to the freedom fighters in Syria that the west are supporting now and that nice bunch of freedom fighters we backed in Libya.

Could someone remind me of the outcome of the Afghan thing, because I can't for the life of me recall what happened with that rather nice bunch of freedom fighters?

No smoke in the park (rules).

I always dreaded one day when the all countries stops to keep gold reserves for safe keeping in ESA the dollar will worth less then a piece of paper.

Russia to create its own national payment system, Putin says "Why should we not do it? We should definitely do it and we will do it," he said, noting that Russia's Central Bank and the government have been looking into the matter.

Not in B&Q's car park you won't. I have it on good authority that they are very prone to tornadoes which not only blow your matches out but take you on a trip to Oz with Toto.
