    Warning over illegal used tyres

Experts have warned that more than a million motorists could be at risk of serious accidents and prosecution after buying substandard used tyres to save money.

New figures show 1.5 million drivers have purchased tyres illegal to use on the road in the past five years.

Police have responded by waging a campaign against drivers caught with defective tyres. The number of drivers pulled over for using illegal tyres has soared 9% since 2009.

Officers can impose roadside penalties of up to ?100 and three penalty points for each substandard tyre.

Despite the law saying used tyres must be stamped "part-worn" to prove that quality control and safety checks have been undertaken, only two out of five people who bought second-hand tyres found them to be appropriately marked.

Inadequate tread can cause skids and significantly increase a vehicle's stopping distance and fuel consumption, according to a report commissioned by insurers LV.

Of the 23 million used tyres sold since 2009, a quarter did not meet safety requirements. The number of trading standards investigations into part-worn tyre dealers has almost doubled in the past five years.

I will stick with a tanner for a tyre and balance, can not effort ?38 for a new tyre, they say it’s the speed which kills.

I used to use part worn tyres. Only ever used two dealers who I trusted & never had a problem.

For the price of cheap & very sh!tty budget tyres I could fit a pair of Pirelli P6000 to whatever I was driving at the time. Given my driving style at the time, I would of killed the cheap budget tyres just as quick as the part worn Pirelli's.

The new car's a lot cheaper on rubber so only get new now... ?190 for a set of four mid range rubber, balanced & fitted with a good clean up of the alloys & fresh bead sealant.

The chances are this story is another twist of the truth. People will be driving on illegal tyres, but only because they don't check them. I'm willing to bet they only know the tryes need changing when their car fails an MOT. Of those found to have illegal tyres, only a fraction will have fitted part worns & only a few of them would of been done within the past 6 months.

Saw an Audi A6 in a carpark over the weekend. '12 plate with a 'I am so important' knob jockey behind the wheel. Front n/s tyre below the markers with no outside tread. Didn't see the others but I can imagine.

Ive never purchased part worn myself.. however, i did purchase a car which had the steel showing on the front drivers side.. and that was changed for a part worn..

Before the MOT the passenger side was close to the minimum so i changed both..

              Diferent Car,
Ive just put the 308 though its MOT 2 weeks ago.. I knew the tires where close to illegal but the garage insisted that the steel was showing. Ahh i doubt.. i checked them the night before.. but for ?110 for 2 new fronts for a car the mrs uses to drive 2 mile too and from work 5 times a week is a bargain..

these where cheapos and i find now its harder to wheelspin on a local junction is is prone to oil..

              Win Win..

              Check your tyres fools

Wish I could get tyres for less than ?100 each, let alone ?38 for a tyre, balance and valve Nothing really wrong with part worn tyres and in the past I've bought them myself. It's motorists who buy a car and don't think they have to llook at it themselves between MOT's that need to get a grip.

As for the reason more people are getting caught, it's simple, people have less money, bills are going up, wages aren't, something has to give and in a choice of food or tyres, take your pick. Running on bald or worse tyres will cost more in the long run, but I dare say that telling your wife and kids that won't help at the time.

It is propaganda. I dare say some MP's have bought some shares in Dunlop and aren't seeing enough of a profit. As for the police -
Police have responded by waging a campaign against drivers caught with defective tyres.
They must be hitting the fines targets then. ?100 a pop against 1/4 of 23 million tyres is just under ?600,000,000 in fines. That'll be sorely missed if people 'get legal' - not that they shouldn't be legal anyway, no excuse for poor maintenance. There was me thinking that it wasn't about the money or the fines -t's not about punishment, it's about education....

Aye I've been there before to that place I also used to turn up at garages my brother worked at, got a real nice set or 4 for ?380 one time sadly he's working up in Jokland atm, so my next set of tyres I'll probably be returning to that place when I need a new pair on the rear - the joys of having different width tyres on the front and back

simple cure ferk the vat off for tyres no one bother much with part worn pish then, the same should go for parts for brakes, steering etc in fact all major parts for cars if the govs serious aboot safety, which i dont think they give a ferk aboot really only the vat that parts generate.
