Britain's biggest lottery winners give ?4m to Scottish independence campaign

Britain's biggest lottery winners back the break-up of Britain
Colin and Christine Weir are said to have donated a total of ?4 million to Alex Salmond's campaign.

Britain?s biggest lottery winners are reported have gifted a total of ?4 million to the campaign to break-up Britain since winning ?161 million in 2011.

Colin and Christine Weir gave ?1 million to the Scottish National Party soon after their EuroMillions win, and the same amount to the Yes Scotland campaign last year.

In recent months, they are said to have donated another ?2 million to Alex Salmond's campaign, making them the biggest donors in Scottish political history.

The SNP?s growing war chest has prompted accusations that Scotland?s First Minister is attempting to buy victory in the independence referendum, with a wide gulf opening up between the finances of the rival campaigns.

The pro-Union Better Together campaign has so far declared donations of around ?3 million, while Yes Scotland has declared ?1.7 million.

However, the independence campaign last detailed its donations in April 2013, and according to estimates earlier this year may have built up funds of around ?7 million.

Good for them at least they're honest enough to put their cards on the table. I still haven't heard a proper argument from any other side just browbeating and scaremongering and now they want to complain SNP have got more money boo hoo. The other parties have had it too good for too long and gave us nothing in return. SJ they are well known for their generosity to their community we need more like them.

I almost commented on here about this, something along the lines of "When I left home I was independent of my parents, they never kept my room for me, did my washing, cooked me meals, gave me money, shored up my overdraft, guaranteed my loans for me either" Did I call them bullies for saying "you wanted it, you got it, now live with it? " I think not - it was my choice, so I did all those things myself which made me independent.

Alex has now given Scotland that choice, whether it was wanted or not. About time Alex stopped sulking for those minor details he forgot like a currency, joining the EU etc and got on with telling people what he's going to to make up for it - rather than blame other people for his lack of foresight and his inability to think outside his own gravity field
My master plan is to live forever..... going to plan so far
Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

It has been proposed before that the lottery jackpot should be lowered to make more winners. But it comes with a big downside.

If you win ?1m, how many people can you help while maintaining a comfortable life?
Most of the arguments around this mentioned 'who needs more than ?1m?'.
So you buy a house, a car or two, clear your debts.. and a few other debts for people. Help a few members of your family & close friends. By the time you've done that you're down to ?500,000 or less. So in about 15 years time the money will be gone. That won't see me through to my pension.

Where if you win ?100m on the Euro. Family & friends will also be able to enjoy a comfortable life. Charities will benefit from large donations.
Even if you spend ?10m in that first year, you would still get over ?4m back in interest payments (based on 5%, which is low). That's ?4m every year to live off & give out without touching the remaining ?90m balance.

Although, I would be making sure as little of that money manages to find it's way into politicians hands.
