'Blackbox' exposes a ?54,000 car insurance fraud

Three people who fraudulently tried to claim ?54,000 in damage and personal injuries following a minor car accident have had their claim rejected after a telematics device - a "blackbox" for cars - proved their claim was implausible.

The incident involved a flatbed lorry and a Vauxhall Astra. The Astra was travelling behind the lorry in slow moving traffic and ran into the back of it, hitting its tow bar. There was no damage to the lorry and minor damage to the front of the car.

The three passengers in the lorry claimed for personal injuries and damage totalling ?54,000 from Aviva the Astra driver?s insurance company.

However, the car was fitted with a telematics device, which feeds information to insurers about how, when, and where a car is driven including details on the driver?s speed and braking habits.

The data from the box, which is there to prove safe driving habits and reduce insurance premiums - showed that the claimed injuries were completely implausible.

This seems like a lead in to all insurance companies insisting that everyone has a device fitted to save on insurance premiums - which they'l charge more for anyway. Sounds like they're softening people up by telling them how much it will save the insurance industry

Doesn't matter which area an insurance company is, I always feel like I've been rear ended by them when paying their ridiculous premiums.

There should be two insurance policies, one for your car and other for those who want to have injury compensation policy that way there will be no fraudulent claim involved, and thoes caught should get 3years behind bars.

If those boxes become mandatory my insurance will rocket, but it won't be because of my driving.
F'ing LPG system is a right pain in the ass when the average air temp is below 15C.

Even if I didn't have the LPG problem I'd still see an increase. I drive fast & do brake hard on some corners, but I'm safe & always awre of what's going on around me. Not like the Golf driver I saw two days ago who went down a one way road the wrong way & went head to head with a volvo.

We've got one of these boxes fitted to the missus corsa. It was put in so her son aged 19 can drive it at weekends. You can go on the Internet and check it every week. So far it had shown us that her driving is terrible and her sons driving is very good.

Let me guess.... It was an automatic.

The amount of times I hear people claiming to of hit the wrong pedal when driving an auto, it's laughable. You have two pedals, one makes you go..the other makes you stop. A manual car has three pedals...now there's confusing,
