Households to be granted up to ?7,600 for energy-efficient home improvements

Government offers to pay homeowners to install energy efficiency measures after low take-up of Green Deal loan scheme

Households will be granted up to ?7,600 each to install double glazing, boilers and insulation, as the government attempts to encourage energy efficiency measures after the low take-up of its Green Deal loan scheme.

Ministers said a ?120m pot of cash would be offered to households from June to carry out home improvements recommended by either Energy Performance Certificates or Green Deal Assessments.

The Green Deal, launched last year, was supposed to herald a "revolution" in energy efficiency with homeowners funding home improvements through loans paid back out of the resulting savings on their energy bills.

But take-up has been pitifully low with just 2,000 households signing up for the loan scheme amid widespread acknowlegement the interest on the loans is unattractively high.

Consumers will now be offered ?1,000 for installing any two approved measures on a list including storage heaters, condenser boilers and double glazing, and a further ?500 if they have bought the property within the previous year.

All well and good, but I dare say you have to get in an approved surveyor at around ?500 to visit then pay an approved fitter to fit approved goods. Probably end up costing ?5k, even after getting ?1k back, to get those things fitted - when in reality your local builder would have charged you ?3k had you gone straight there *shrug* That's why there was little or no take up for the 'green deal', you had to be a cabbage to take it up.
