Two-Thirds of UK Could Be Opened Up for Fracking

National parks, urban commons and cities across the UK are to be opened up for fracking and other forms of oil and gas exploration, ministers are to announce.

The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is expected to announce a new round of onshore oil and gas exploration licensing, with around two-thirds of Britain potentially on offer to exploration companies.

Large areas of London are expected to be made available, along with parts of south Devon, north Norfolk, the South Downs, Yorkshire and the Cotswolds, according to a Sunday Times report.

This week, fracking company Cuadrilla will submit a planning application to Lancashire county council for a site at Preston New Road and another at Roseacre, both near Blackpool in the northwest of England.

Francis Egan, chief executive of Cuadrilla, said the first quantities of gas from the sites could enter the national grid by late next year.

Egan suggested that around half a dozen fracking sites, each with 10 to 20 wells, would be needed to obtain gas lying beneath each 100 square kilometres of land. This could means several hundreds of fracking sites and thousands of wells across the north of England.

It could also lead to lots of trespassing claims against them unless the government changes the law - which they have indicated that they will do, and in doing so remove your right to stop them fracking under your land/house.

This will no doubt ruin the countryside and most of all do we have to do it as there is an abundance of gas in the world it's being done for greed and we won't see any cheaper prices. There is a huge amount of gas to be got by fracking but as in an interview on tv last year ceo of largest gas company said no need to frack just now as there was enough gas reserves till end of century.

          Let them start in London.

Then when everyone starts complaining of illness, earth tremors & the city falls down..... Then the government might think again about fracking.

What am I think of. They'd just move it out of their sight & destroy the rest of the country instead.

You obviously missed the part where I wrote that the government are looking at changing the law on trespass so they can drill under your house to extract without your permission then? Yes 50/50 they get the gas as their 50%, and for your 50% you get the water contamination and the earthquakes. Oh and as a taxpayer you'll pick up the bill for any mistakes that are made like contaminating the water table and for disposing of the contaminated water etc.

As far as the government are concerned the UK is London, anywhere outside of that is just somewhere they can utilise when they want something.

Why not just drill under the Commons', there must be loads of gas inside and underneath. ??

And hopefully a few kegs left over from the last attempt to get rid of the scum.

                    Ah here we go

The UK government has proposed new rules regarding rights to access land in a bid to speed up the introduction of fracking.
It proposes that shale oil and gas companies are granted access to land below 300m from the surface.
It also suggests firms pay ?20,000 per well to those living above the land.

"These proposals allow shale and geothermal development while offering a fair deal for communities in return for underground access at depths so deep they will have no negative impact on landowners."
The new proposals do not affect the existing system for gaining access rights to land on the surface.
The government also proposed a new notification system to ensure local communities are well informed about any shale developments in their area.
The ?20,000 would be an additional payment on top of the ?100,000 per site already announced, and is specifically designed for those living above horizontal pipes under ground. Shale exploration companies have already committed to giving 1% of revenues from any successful wells to local communities.
But the government has not gone far enough in its proposals for compensating local residents, according to Sir Merrick Cockell, chairman of the Local Government Association.
"Given the significant tax breaks being proposed to drive forward the development of shale gas and the likely returns, payments to communities should be more in line with those across the rest of the world and be set at between 5%-10% of revenues," he said.

BBC News - UK looks to boost fracking with new land access rules

Excellent frack below a small town and pay everyone 50 pence each to trespass. I also suppose that payment will also remove any obligation of those companies for damage caused and any environmental cleanup that may be required.

The uk gov being the jackanories tells a story just another way to keep their millions rolling in at the expense of the rest. Energy is not in short supply and never will be unless we destroy the ways of making it. Funny how they can make laws very quickly when money for them is concerned but when it's to protect us the laws are too complicated to change straight away.
