Independent Scotland Could Offer Edward Snowden Political Asylum

An independent Scotland could offer political asylum to Edward Snowden, whose disclosure of classified NSA documents on US surveillance techniques prompted an international storm.

Members of the Scottish parliament (MSPs) have considered a call for the former NSA contractor, who is currently being sheltered in Russia, to be given political asylum in Scotland if voters opt for independence in September's referendum.

Campaigner Mick Napier, a former university lecturer, put forward a petition to the Scottish parliament's Public Petitions Committee, saying Snowden was owed a "debt of gratitude" for his actions and that hosting him would be an "honour for Scotland".

"Edward Snowden has revealed information to us that we would not otherwise know, it is of significance to every single citizen in Scotland," Napier said

I guess he has a legit reason for going there, it seems the Scots love him and I wonder if they will give asylum to Assange as well, rumours an independent Scotland could give free petrol to grassers, any more crazy stories???

You'd have to ask how he'd get there anyway. Since any country's airspace he flew threw to get there would ground the aircraft, arrest and deport him to the US. Thankfully I doubt Putin will kick him out.

I'd fully expect loads of more non stories to hit the press in the lead up to the Independance Vote. It's a bit like UKIP. They got savaged in the press for their racist and homophobic views yet it was forgotten to metion they have gay and coloured candidates. Now they have shown that the public and by that I also mean recent immigrants support their views, stand by for the other parties to suddenly remember they actually support the idea of limiting immigrants etc.

Aye, but then again the public who voted for UKIP weren't bright enough to realise that voting for them in the recent elections actually makes no change to the UK's membership - they only go to claim expenses and avoid getting a real job. Only two groups can get the UK out of the EU, one group we'll be voting for next year and the other lot aren't elected. Maybe now UKIP will have to come back with real facts prior to them standing (or wobbling) in the election next year - something they've failed to do so far.

Your estimate will still be closer than Alex's. Let's face it, if the vote is against then the SNP will have to ask what their core goal is when (if) the vote went against them. So he's going to make up/say anything which gets the vote to be yes. So in that sense - at this time the SNP's biggest interest will be preservation of that position. After all they're politicians and aren't in it out of kindness. The building of Holyrood was estimated at ?10-40 million
