Approval has been given for the Metropolitan Police to purchase three water cannon for London.
Stephen Greenhalgh, deputy mayor for policing and crime, authorised the force to buy the cannon from the German Federal Police.
The mayor's office said: "By purchasing them now we are able to save over ?2.3m compared to buying new devices."
The water cannon will not be deployed until the home secretary authorises their use in England and Wales.
In a statement, the mayor's office said purchasing the cannon now for just over ?218,000, before Theresa May approves them, meant they could be bought at a "considerably reduced rate".
The cannon will be purchased for ?30,000 each, as opposed to the cost of a single new one at ?870,000.
A Home Office spokesman said: "We are keen to ensure that the police have the tools and powers they need to maintain order on our streets."
It said Chief Constable David Shaw, as the national policing lead, had written to the home secretary to request water cannon be authorised for use by the police in England and Wales and Ms May was considering the request.
The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) said that each cannon had a life-expectancy of five years, or longer with good maintenance, and if approval was not given by Ms May, then they could be re-sold.

What do they do when there's a hosepipe ban on, plead with the crowd to donate water. Never needed them before in the UK, so why they feel they need them now is a mystery. Perhaps they will need them if the Tories get elected next year.

The home secretary has refused to allow the use of water cannon in England and Wales - a year after three of them were bought by the Metropolitan Police.
Theresa May said "without safeguards" they had "the capacity to cause harm".
London Mayor Boris Johnson authorised the purchase of three second-hand cannon, at a total cost of ?328,883.
He said he "failed to see the physiological difference" between people in Northern Ireland - where cannon are used - and elsewhere.
Labour's shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said Mrs May's decision was "exactly right", but the Met Police said they were "disappointed".
Water cannon are used in Northern Ireland, but have never been deployed in the rest of the UK.
They were deployed most recently in north Belfast on Monday against Loyalist demonstrators during the annual Twelfth of July celebrations.

That'd be the Germans inflating the prices to cover the money they're lending the Greece, administration and errrm hospitality costs at a guess - the sort where you get the cafe bill and it's ?5000 a head. Nothing to do with me guv', and it was I who questioned it at the start of this thread

At teh end of the day the gibbon has spend hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers money, with no justification for something that can't be used. Where's the accountability in that?
