    Not enough income

The maximum fine for speeding on the motorway is to be quadrupled to ?10,000 as part of sweeping reforms to the penalties which can be imposed by magistrates, the Government has announced.

Other fines for breaking the limit on dual carriageways and other roads will also increase four-fold from ?1,000 to ?4,000, along with the maximum fine for using a mobile telephone at the wheel.

Motoring groups condemned the massive increases as “draconian” and warned they could deter innocent motorists from challenging speeding tickets in the court through fear that they could be hit with crippling penalties.

For the first time magistrates will also get the power to impose unlimited fines for more serious offences such as careless driving or driving without insurance.

Jeremy Wright, the justice minister, said: “Financial penalties set at the right level can be an effective way of punishing criminals and deterring them from further offending.

Maximum motorway speeding fine set to rocket to ?10,000 - Telegraph

Obviously since they've plastered the country in speed cameras motorists have got wise and the government aren't making enough. I don't see any increase for fiddling your expenses or lying to a court to avoid getting points on your license? All in it together eh, sure looks that way to me............... not.

The government is collecting a record amount in fines, with ?284 million taken in 2012-13.
Think they're trying to make ?2 trillion, 1.3 of that for the debt and the rest in expenses. Good old motorist eh, pay for road tax and don't get roads repaired, pay fuel duty and that disappears, pay vat on the fuel duty, so where's the value added element in that?

Speeding fines raised cash cow imo, but drive and use the phone whilst driving and you should be fined every penny you got. No excuse with hands free kits etc etc etc

I'd like to see who get's the biggest fine & what for.

Where I live, speed cameras don't work. The only ones in use are mobile vans & the Rozzers.

The thing is...everybody speeds. It's all dependent on road conditions, weather & who you pass as to what happens. I've passed marked traffic cars doing over 80mph on motorways. Never been pulled for it.

But use of mobile phones, driving without due care & attention and dangerous driving should be clamped down on. When the fine for using a mobile was raised, I saw more people using their phones while driving... not less.

I'm gonna be getting myself one of those dual camera CCTV units for the car. I'll go hunting for the idiots & send the footage to that site that's been set up for the police.
Now there's a new sport. Who gets the highest total in fines per month from their in-car footage.

It will come to the stage when they fine you that you'll just say jail me because the size of fine is a joke. The jails couldn't hold everyone and surely it's better to teach you how to drive properly? Just another way of cluttering up the justice system with crap instead of sorting out real crime. Who is it that gets away with determining the size of fines as they don't live in the real world. Someone who doesn't have insurance for instance probably drives a scrapper anyway and wont pay the fine. As above it is just another cash cow that we accept. Should we?

If they want to hand out large fines to make money and deter accidents and deaths on the road..... fine cyclists who go through red lights, don't have lights on when it's dark and go the wrong way down way way streets. They'd make an kin mint and it would soon cut down on cyclist deaths.
