Tories use promise of HS3 to bribe us Northerners.

The chancellor proposes a high speed rail link between Manchester and Leeds boost the economy of the North West and spread some of the "wealth" not being felt north of Watford. That's OK then !
Nothing again for Scotland, Newcastle and Cumbria. That's how much this government wants to keep Scotland in the UK and stimulate growth in the north of England. Don't hold your breath waiting for any start to be made on this project even after the next general election.

Why would we want to rip up even more greenbelt land for new rails when we have existing rails that need upgrading?

Just repair the current northern line.

HS2 is under funded and very unpopular with the people it's supposed to be helping. So HS3 really is just one big pink elephant.

I said Manchester to Leeds not Leeds to Manchester, although who the hell would want to go to Leeds either ? The Chanceller left out the scousers and John Prescott country (Hull) as well as the rest of the northern UK. HS3 is projected to save about 10 minutes if the existing Trans Pennine line is upgraded and "Straightened" using tunnels. I don't understand why ? There is an existing Trans Pennine tunnel running east to west and its called "Woodhead" and it was closed a few years ago by our muppet politicians due to lack of economic use. Hmm....10 minutes time saved... wtf.....

HS2 - HS3 I would rather have my pension when i'm supposed to not filling private owned company's boots. Prices quoted are always unrealistic as well and nobody cares because joe public will pay in the end.

They should introduce a referendum system for any project the government wants to do where the taxpayper will foot the bill for anything more than say ?1 billion, allowing the country to decide where the money is spent. That way the only way they'd get schemes like HS2 passed is if it benefited everyone rather than just those in the south who want to work in the south and buy holiday homes in the north.... Would also make them think before proposing sh*t that only benefited a single area.
