Jeremy Hunt: I would not put my mother in some care homes

HEALTH Secretary Jeremy Hunt said yesterday that he would not want to send his mother or father to many of Britain?s care homes.

Mr Hunt said there are ?far too many? failing homes but it is hard for members of the public to distinguish them from those run by excellent providers.

Mr Hunt announced a tough Ofsted-style inspection regime under which failing homes and home care services would be put into ?special measures? and threatened with closure ? as inadequate hospitals are now.

The announcement came as Andrea Sutcliffe, the chief inspector of social care, said that every week examples of ?truly awful care? are brought to light including ?older people treated roughly? and people with dementia not being helped to eat and drink.

Mr Hunt said most of the hospitals put into special measures a year ago had improved significantly but he added: ?We must never again have a situation where the system knows there is a problem but the public don?t.

?There are many excellent home care providers and many outstanding care homes in this country but there are still too many where I would personally not want my mother or my father or grandparents to live.

My partner is an assistant manager in a care home and the problem is benefits are not much less than the wages some carers get paid so there's no incentive to work hard. They also tend to be the ones who left school with no quals so not the brightest. With job seekers allowances some are made to go for interviews or their benefits stop, they get well pissed off when they get offered a job.
