    Music industry stupid?

A group representing musicians in the US is suing Ford and General Motors over in-car CD players that allow tracks to be stored on a hard drive.
The entertainment systems can "rip" music from a disc, to save passengers from constantly re-inserting CDs.
The Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies claims the devices are made "for the express purpose" of copying CDs.
It says its members, including MGMT and REO Speedwagon, are due royalties.
In a class action lawsuit filed in the District of Columbia, the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies (AARC) claims it repeatedly asked Ford and General Motors "to live up to their statutory obligations" but the firms refused.
The association says its artists are due royalty payments under the Audio Home Recording Act (AHRA) of 1992, which states musicians are entitled to compensation for the copying of their works.
The defendants, it says, "refused to pay the royalties that [US] congress has determined they owe for the recording devices they manufacture, import, and/or distribute".

The AARC is also suing automotive technology company Denso and Clarion, which develops the in-car entertainment systems.

Does the music industry really think that we should have to carry 50+ cd's around in a car and swap them each time we want to listen to a different track? Just greed on the part of the record companies who want paying twice *shrug* Bunch of losers or what.

POint is, if I bought it once, why should I pay for it (in a roundabout way, but paying extra for the stereo because they make the manufacturer pay) again? It's about time the music industry got with the 21st century and realised that they model they have for making money just isn't going to work and if they keep pushing people will just 'steal' music instead. There's nothing to stop me borrowing CD's from my mates and ripping them in my car, or on my computer etc. By making people pay twice they're really making that choice for me, rip my mates CD's for free onto the car stereo which I will end up paying more for. At least that way I've only paid once *shrug*

GREED. That's the operating word in the music industry.
Gareth Brooks, a few years ago, wanted royalties from his cds a second time if you donated his cds to a charity shop and the shop resold them.
Bono wanted royalties for singing U2 songs at their (U2) concerts.

I bought timber a few years ago and made and erected shelving from it. Do I charge the missus everytime she uses her cookbooks on it?

Every shop or business in the UK must have a "licence" if their employees or their customers can listen to music from a radio or music player regardless of whether they are listening to it or not. It is deemed as a public performance by the PRS and can cost some businesses as much as ?500 per year. It is another form of government supported taxation ripoff to pay royalties to the likes of Beyonce and Bing Crosby's great, great, grandchildren.!
