Evans outside court during his trial for rape. Evans, 25, will be released in July 2014 after serving half of a five-year sentence (PA)
Evans, 25, was jailed for five years at Caernarfon Crown Court in April 2012 after being found guilty of raping a 19-year-old in a hotel room. He was released on Friday after serving half that sentence.
Sheffield United could have sacked him on the grounds of gross misconduct, but the Daily Mail's Matt Lawton reports that the club did not do so and instead continued to pay the player after he was sent down.
Evan's contract ran out three months later, in June - but he also received his salary for July, as is apparently normal with players who are at the end of their contracts.
"The Welsh international forward actually received his July salary too; something that a club is contractually obliged to do when releasing a player who has not, at that stage, found another club," the Mail explains.
The newspaper contacted Sheffield United, but received no comment.
The striker, formerly of Manchester City, admitted having sex with the woman and the prosecution successfully argued that she was too drunk to consent.
