    mps forced to live on rations

    ~~~~ me ?64,000 plus perks rations ?
    MILLIONAIRE Tory Alan Duncan's future was plunged into doubt last night after he whinged MPs were treated like "s**t" - and lived on "rations".
    The Shadow Commons leader looked dangerously isolated after David Cameron FAILED to give him his full backing.
    Mr Duncan - the Tory's chief negotiator on reform of MPs pay and expenses - was secretly filmed complaining about how badly MPs are treated.
    His outburst was captured by Heydon Prowse of green group Don't Panic. The MP had invited him to the Commons after the activists dug a pound sign in his lawn in protest at his gardening expenses.
    The video shows Mr Duncan defending his claims for gardening bills - even though he has promised to pay back more than ?4,000. He declares: "I could claim the whole bloody lot, but I don't."
    He also warns that talented people won't want to be MPs, despite the ?64,000 wage.
    Asked why, he says: "Basically, it's being nationalised, you have to live on rations and are treated like s**t."
    The film also has Tory MP Nigel Evans joking that he makes sandwiches in the Commons bar.
    He says: "Got to have a second income mate, couldn't survive on 64."
    Furious Mr Cameron was yesterday travelling back from a family holiday in France.
    Asked if Mr Duncan still enjoyed his leader's confidence, a party spokesman said: "We don't know. David's on a ferry."
    But sources said party chiefs took a "very dim view" of Mr Duncan's "unacceptable" outburst.
    One Shadow Cabinet minister said Mr Duncan - who is abroad on holiday - was "skating on very thin ice".
    Mr Duncan rushed out a hasty apology after the video was released. He said: "The last thing people want to hear is an MP whingeing about his pay and conditions,
    "It is a huge honour to be an MP and my remarks, although meant in jest, were completely uncalled for. I apologise unreservedly."
    But Business Secretary Lord Mandelson last night condemned Mr Duncan. He said: "I don't know what sort of joke he is trying to make.
    "Alan Duncan is very fond of speaking a good game publicly, but in private talking and acting quite differently."
    Labour MP John Mann said: "Alan Duncan should have a word with Sun readers - they'd put him right."
