99p store? Not in our town!

snobby ~~~~ers u cant beat the ?1 and 99p shops more the better

We all like a bargain. But you can have too much of a good thing, as a Cotswold market town has found out to its (very low) cost.

After learning that a fourth shop selling everything for ?1 or less is to open in Stroud, locals have mounted a campaign against it, arguing that too many such shops lower the tone of the area.

A petition on social networking website Facebook protesting against the arrival next month of an outlet of The 99p Store has now gathered more than 1,000 fans.
    Stroud

Picturesque: But plans for a fourth pound shop in Stroud have met anger

The site, named: ?We don?t want a 99p Store in Stroud!?, has led to calls for more ?upmarket? retailers to come to the Gloucestershire town.

One protester wrote, ?I think we need a Primark in Stroud?, while another added: ?I reckon we need a Marks and Spencer ? much better quality store, and we haven?t got one nearby.?

The new shop will rent the space vacated by Woolworths, which closed in January after 90 years in Stroud.

While acknowledging that it was better for the premises to be used by a shop rather than

remaining empty, Stroud mayor Andy Read said: ?I think a significant number of Stroud people share my view that it would have been better to have something a little fresher.?

But the co-founder of The 99p Store, Hussein Lalani, said there was a demand for the outlets he runs.

The chain claims to serve one million customers each week through 66 shops, and aims to have 120 outlets by next year.

Mr Lalani said: ?We have to be realistic. Everyone would love to have their town or village looking like a picture postcard with traditional shops but that?s not what people want to buy on a daily basis.

?People need discount stores and many have been affected by the credit crunch.

?Empty stores are contagious too ? you have one empty store and fewer people go there and that part of town dies. It?s in everyone?s interest to have it filled.?

In January it was reported that a pound shop in Poole, Dorset, had been put out of business by a 99p store

Mr Lalani makes some great points it would be hard to argue with him I hardly think the scruffs are going to be crawling out the woodwork just because it's a 99p shop, now in my area it's a completely different story
