UK weather: Freezing Britain colder than ALASKA as temperatures plunge to -9C overnig

Brits awoke to a shivering start to the week as the mercury plunged to -9C overnight ? making parts of the UK colder than ALASKA.

The mercury plunged to -8.7C (16.3F) in Katesbridge, Co Down ? a record low for 2014.

And while it may not have been as low as the -10C (14F) predicted it is unlikely to have felt much different as 2014 comes to a chilly end.

In the traditionally freezing US state of Alaska meanwhile, temperatures hovered around the -3C mark.

A weather warning for ice is in place for the east Midlands as a combination of freezing temperatures and offshore rain showers risk slippery surfaces.

It does feel like Alaska hears today; don’t feel like working at all. How can any one work when spanners and tools frozen cold?

Very carefully while wearing gloves and a gas space heater blasting away in the background?

It's the one thing that I don't miss about working in a garage, opening up at 7am on a winters morning and freezing my nutz off all day long. I gave it up in 1983 and have sat in a nice warm office, or home, since then. Seems like being disqualified from driving for a while back then did me a favor, even though it didn't seem like it at the time

Those were the days, (awful) thermals a must, salamander stove out side for breaktimes and thawing out, oil changes dropping in the snow, thankfully never never again. I remember my son asking me to get him an apprenticeship, I didn't because I wouldn't wish that profession on anyone, he's now a maintenance fitter, yeh!, working in the freezing cold were cursed I tell yah!!!
