'I have a fixed contract with Sky so why's my bill risen ?3.50 a month?'

A reader asks why Sky (Other OTC: BSYBF - news) has increased her monthly direct debits when they agreed to a fixed price three months earlier

Three months ago I renegotiated my contract with Sky for television, broadband and telephone calls agreeing to pay monthly ?49.50 for a Sky (LSE: SKY.L - news) Bundle, line rental ?15 plus anytime telephone calls ?5 with free broadband for the next 12 months fixed. When I received notification of a price increase I telephoned and was told this would not be applied to my account. It was, though, and I contacted them but received no reply.

On prompting some days later I was told they could not process my query until they had the Sky holder?s full name (already given), full address of Sky account, including postcode or Sky account number (already given). After supplying the required details they informed me that they could not help as the Data Protection Act meant I had to conclusively prove I was the account holder. Eventually they confirmed the increase of ?3.50 per month was the reason for higher bills. Surely a fixed-term contract is a fixed-term contract. MB, Cheshire

Despite you having understood the price to be fixed, the increase you mentioned brought up your bill to ?73. Additional calls took it to ?81.97 for the month. Further to my involvement Sky said it was applying an offer to your account for 12 months, worth ?21.50 in all for the year. This illustrates how flexible and/or negotiable such deals can be.

A Sky spokesman said: ?We were sorry to learn of the confusion Mrs B experienced with her Sky Talk billing. We have offered Mrs B a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience caused.?

When I spoke to your husband he sounded underwhelmed and said the offer was for ?21.50 and so not very much. I pushed Sky again and it came back saying you were happy. I called you again and learnt that Sky had now rejigged the account back to what I had been assured it was going to be after my first intervention. Naturally you are indeed now happy.
