UK may look into welfare cuts for addicts, overweight

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain might reduce welfare benefits for people who refuse treatment for obesity or drug and alcohol problems, Prime Minister David Cameron said on Saturday.

He said that if his Conservative Party wins national elections in May, he would set up a review into whether withholding sickness benefit payments was the right approach.

"Too many people are stuck on sickness benefits because of issues that could be addressed but instead are not," he said in a statement.

"Some have drug or alcohol problems, but refuse treatment. In other cases, people have problems with their weight that could be addressed, but instead a life on benefits rather than work becomes the choice."

Cameron said 100,000 people were claiming sickness benefits on the grounds of treatable conditions such as drug or alcohol addiction or obesity, and there was no requirement they undertake treatment.

Britain's finance minister George Osborne has said he plans to make cuts of 12 billion pounds a year in welfare payments if the Conservatives are re-elected as part of a push to wipe out Britain's still wide budget deficit.

A group which seeks to help people lose weight said the plan would be a waste of money, given the complexities of ****ysing individuals' weight problems and checking up on their progress. Instead the government should focus on weight-gain prevention.

"Threatening people isn't the way forward," said Susannah Gilbert, a co-founder of Big Matters, an obesity support organisation. "We need to put in place a structure to help anybody who wants to lose weight and that just isn't there."

No idea how he think he's going to save ?12 billion that way, since that would be around 7% of the DWP budget, certainly no reflection on what's paid in sickness etc. The disability living allowance is ?13 billion a year so I'g guess that he's aiming to cut that by about 90%? Like "get up out that wheelchair and get a f**king job you lazy b****rd" will do the trick? It's yet another con trick by the Tories to prove that they are saving money. Now the bigger question is where is the money they have been saving? It's not paying off the debt, it's not being given back to taxpayers. So the only conclusion can be is that the money is being used to fund other things. Private companies to carry out contracts for public services and that their mates can make more money out of ? Schemes to provide their friends companies with even more money? More money for banks? Funding cheaper mortgages for those under 40, yes I haven't forgotten that one.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah way too late. If he's accusing those of being overweight and addicts of claiming disability living allowance, then why is the total budget for disability living allowance ?13 billion and he's going to cut ?12 billion from that? In effect he's saying that just over 90% claiming disability living allowance are overweight or addicts. f**king tosser, still the will believe him. Memory loss tax cuts due soon.

                    as for this

"We need to put in place a structure to help anybody who wants to lose weight and that just isn't there."
No, we should tax all overweight ?1 per pound they are overweight when they walk into a fast food place to order food. Want a 99p burger fatperson? That'll be 99 pence for the burger and + ?37 in fat tax. Soon put 'em off
