EU referendum: London Mayor Boris Johnson wants public to vote for an exit

Johnson's beliefs are at odds with Cameron's desire for a "yes" vote (Source: Getty)

Ultimately, he says he wants the UK to remain in the bloc, but hopes voting to leave will shock EU leaders into giving Britain a better deal.

According to sources who spoke to The Sunday Times, he told friends he wants a two-stage referendum, where the public favour of an exit, and then votes to stay in once a better deal is offered.

Reading between the lines he is basically saying that a vote to leave the EU should be ignored, which listening to Cameron's wittering about the EU sounds as if that is the Conservative stance on the Referendum.
Placate the public with a Referendum vote, then just ignore the result.

Did you expect anything less from a conservative government? The only reason there is a referendum at all was so that Dave can keep his party behind him and to fool the into electing him. As for Boris, everyone knows his shoe size is greater than his IQ at the best of times.

The tories don't want to leave it was just a vote winner and now they are going to manipulate the outcome. One question in or out we will see if greece falls on its backside in short term yes in long run no. The eu is just those and such and they have been ruling us for centuries. Just another form of control and like cameron kid on they are giving you something and then bend you over.

TBH, and you can check on this, a lot of the 'legislation forced on us by the EU' isn't. A fair chunk is optional and can be taken up, changed, thrown out in some case etc but the government prefer to impose as is, or make it worse, and then claim that the EU forced them to do it. It suits the government to have a scapegoat for it's own failures. The majority of the sh*t is guidance to make things consistent across the EU, though it doesn't have to be, though there are some areas where there are no exceptions.

For instance, you can drive a car in some countries at the age of 16, that was never imposed on the UK and the government has kept the minimum age to 17. What's the difference between someone who's 16 and someone who's 17? Why should people who are 16 n the UK be disadvantaged? Why is the motorway speed limit in most EU countries higher than the limit in the UK? Are they better drivers, have better cars, or do the UK government prefer sending out speeding invoices? Why is is compulsory in most EU countries to have a warning triangle if you break down, yet in the UK it's not? Do the government consider UK drives expendable?

I picked on the easy ones really, so won't go on because the list is massive and can get quite complex. The above just go to show that governments can, and do choose how they legislate for EU recommendations.

Too true, but not the sort of common sense that gets peddled by the right-wing anti EU Tory press.

The worrying aspect though is that a lot of people, including a lot of DK members seem to believe a lot of the sh*te they're fed by the press
