More than half of UK households get more in benefits than they pay in tax, says think

LONDON (ShareCast) - According to a report by think-tank the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS), more than half of UK households received more in state benefits than they paid in tax in 2013/14. According to the report, which is based on figures from the Office For National Statistics, 13.7m received significantly more in cash benefits than they paid in tax, representing 30% of UK households.

The next 10% received on average ?596 a year more in cash benefits than they paid, while the top 60% paid more in tax than they got back in cash benefits.

These cash benefits included benefits in kind, such as free state education, free healthcare, andsubsidies for trains and buses.

Adam Memon, Head (Other OTC: HEDYY - news) of Economic Research at the CPS, and co-author of the report, urged the government to press ahead with welfare cuts, adding that those figures displayed levels of "welfare dependency" that were too high.

"Welfare dependency is an economically destructive phenomenon which tears at Britain's social fabric. It reduces the incentive to work and earn more whilst keeping people trapped in a cycle of low aspirations, low productivity and low pay."

There are 3 choices when the government cuts working tax credits to 'encourage people to work'

1) Raise the tax threshold so no-one pays tax when on the minimum wage - typical Tory tactic is to cut PAYE, but raise everything else, but it looks good to the
2) Raise the minimum wage to a living wage - their mates would be up in arms having to pay their employees real wages
3) Renegotiate the UK away from the European WTD - Keep the minimum wage (their mates would like that), make it so people can work 60 or 70 hours a week again to earn enough to live on (popular with their mates because boss asks you to work overtime and would likely sack you if you don't, don't raise the tax threshold. Job done.

Item 3 would be my guess. It would also mean that the employees work themselves into an early grave so won't be needing their pensions *shrug*

The poorest fifth of households receive ?14,868 in benefits but pay just ?4,886 in tax.

The richest fifth paid ?20,777 per household more than they received.

If I were you vote for UKIP and get rid of those 3 parties and have more money in the pocket?..

Never read so much sh*t in my life. Hands up all those who pay ?13k or more in taxes, don't be too long about it (though I will stick my hand up). Minimum wage is ?6.50 an hour? 40 hour week that's ?260 a week. ?1040 a month, ?12480 a year. 1 in 20 people on the minimum wage. Average wage for the UK is ?26,000 a year, so going by IDS's pathetic facts people on the average wage are paying more than 50% in tax.

This report was feature on the programme Last Leg, who put it into perspective. School children are taken into account as receiving benefit but not paying towards the pot, Pensioners are considered to be receiving benefit and also requiring more NHS services but not contributing towards the pot, despite having spent their whole lives paying tax.
It also highlighted a nurse working full time; earning ?23K, who was a mother of 3 and so was considered to not be working hard enough or long enough hours and so was also a drain on the system.
Strange that they do not include all of these "benefits" when they tell us about migrants not being a drain on the system but paying in more than they receive.

All points back to the so called renegotiating EU treaty again and getting rid of employment legislation so people can work from dusk to dawn for just enough to live on, and die before they ever reach pension age *shrug*

We cannot just blame those who voted Tory for this, we must condemn the Electoral System !
The Tories only received 36.9% of the votes cast, so 63.1% of the electorate do not want a Tory Government, yet we have a Tory majority.
There are 650 Parliamentary Seats and the Tories have 330 seats which is 50.7% of the seats and so should just guarantee a majority vote for them on any subject.
The SNP had 4.7% of the votes cast and attained 56 seats
UKIP received 12.6% of the votes cast and yet they have only 1 seat
So, we can't blame the Tory voters.......................as usual it is the system to blame !!
