BBC could charge viewers for 'premium' content

John Whittingdale, the Culture Secretary, announces the biggest overhaul of the licence fee for a decade

BBC viewers could be forced to pay for "premium" content such as high quality dramas or sport under the biggest overhaul of the licence fee for a decade.

John Whittingdale, the Culture Secretary, has unveiled two new funding models which could replace the licence fee after the Royal Charter review in 2015.

He said that the corporation cannot be "all things to all people" and suggested that in future a mix of public funding and subscription services could be used to fund the corporation.

Under the proposal the corporation would offer premium packages to those willing to pay more, while those paying the licence fee would receive a "core" service.

Other proposals include a universal household levy, under which every household in Britain would pay the BBC regardless of whether they have a licence fee, and reforming the existing licence fee.

Mr Whittingdale suggested that the current licence fee needs reform because it is "regressive" and forces the poorest to pay the same as the richest.

Government are also reviewing asking old folk if they "wouldn't mind" actually paying for their TV licence, instead of getting it for free.

Aye the government are keeping their promise of over 75's getting free licenses, they're making everyone else cover the cost instead. Low taxation, but you'll pay more in other ways. Here's your ?10k tax bill - pay now, have ?1.35 back and don't forget to pay an extra ?100 a year for your television license. We're such a nice we gave you money back, be thankful. t**sers

I suggest you buy a tv license send it back for a refund and then when they refund you the money, each time they ask for payment send them a photocopy of the refund payment.
Lets see how they like repeats, repeats and yet more repeats
As corp. Jones use to say " they don't................"
