Wheel clamping soars 50% since tax discs ended

Almost 75,000 untaxed cars were immobilised in the past year ? up a staggering 25,000.

Drivers are being caught out by the new rules which mean road tax is not transferred when a car is sold.

Chancellor George Osborne announced he was scrapping the tax disc 18 months ago.

Instead, details of whether a car is properly taxed are held on a database accessible to police and DVLA officials.

But the change has led to a dramatic increase in the number of cars being clamped. Drivers face a fee of up to ?800 to get their vehicles back.

In the year to May, 74,590 vehicles were clamped for not having road tax, up from 49,466 in the year to May 2014 ? a 52 per cent rise.

Someone buying a second-hand car used to be able to use unexpired tax discs as part of the deal.

But now the road tax is cancelled when the seller tells the DVLA they no longer own the vehicle.

Paul Watters, of the AA, said: ?I hope most people realise that checking systems are in place.

?Deliberate offenders who feel they don?t need tax are more likely to be uninsured as well.?

You do get a reminder, I've just had one through for my car, tax due at the end of this month. Collecting the tax money twice when the car is sold is a major rip off, but then again how else will Dave and his mates keep the tax bills down for those poor companies like Voda?

I have bought online for the last 3 years or so, and always get a reminder. You need the reminder for the code to enter onto the website. Are you sure you're not confused???
