Start remembering your ?bags for life? - because from next week you?ll have to cough up 5p for each single-use plastic bag.

The charge is being introduced by major retailers - including all supermarkets - across the UK on Monday, October 5, in a bid to reduce litter and protect wildlife.

More than 7 billion of the bags are handed out each year.

But the Government wants to slash that figure by 80% by getting more people to use the longer-lasting ?bags for life.?

They think it will save ?60 million per year in litter clean-up costs, and generate ?730 million for good causes.

No doubt there will be plenty shouting of look how Eco/Green we are and Save the Plant spouting.
Strange really, my mum used to have her own "Shopping Bag" as did most other women back then, occasionally extra bags were needed and the shops provided them, but they were brown paper bags. No plastic wrapping or bags, things were bought loose and wrapped in old newspapers or paper bags and the paper bags usually ended up as covers for our school books.
All the bottles were glass and returnable, there were no re-cycle bins back then, but there was very little to be re-cycled as most things were found another use when their original usefulness had come to an end.
Not much food was wasted either, most couldn't afford to waste it and of course food shopping was usually done on a daily basis.
All this leads me to believe that much of today's wastefulness is down to change supposedly in the name of advancement but in fact was really only change for change's sake, which in today's world seems to be called "fashion".
