A man who received ?16,800 in benefits claims the Government stopped him from working by being so generous.

Daniel Shaw, who was unemployed for two years, says the large sum meant he had no incentive to find work.

But he had to rely on food banks for survival after he gambled away his money and still did not look for a job, the Manchester Evening News reported .


He has now appeared in a TV programme about people who claim benefits.

“As it stands I am earning more now than someone on minimum wage in a shop”, he told Channel 5 documentary Benefits, which aired on Monday night.

“I want a job but it makes me think ‘why?’ when I am on more money from benefits. It’s the government’s fault, they are basically making me pick the easy way because they are giving me so much money, it’s ridiculous.

“I don’t want to be known as a lazy benefits scrounger but they are dishing all these benefits out left, right and centre and so I am going to take it.”

Daniel also blamed the government for allowing him to gamble away his money.

He added: “I got a same day benefits payment and I blew it all in the casino, I lost ?410 which was to last me a fortnight.

“The government gave me all my money on the same day and I have gambled it away so it is them to blame.”

He said had the right to chose how to spend the handouts, adding: “I am entitled to that money and there are no rules on what I have to spend it on.

I couldn’t give a t*** what anyone thinks, regardless of whether you are on benefits or working, my money is my money and I will do what I want with it.”

He got a job despite claiming that he said he didn't need to. So you have to wonder whether his claims of getting so much were checked by the TV crew.

Channel 5 always show the worst cases, it makes for good viewing figures anyway - so they'd never show those that do genuinely struggle. Perhaps because channel 5 is owned by Northern Shell, owner of comics such as the Daily Express, Sunday Express and other reputable TV stations such as Television X and Redhot TV. Did you expect a channel owned by such a company not to broadly show any group that the government wanted to cast as scroungers in any light other than bad? Don't expect to see a documentary about those genuinely in need on Channel 5 at all.

This guy is an A*** hole no matter which way you look at it but the ?16K has to include payments other than just his basic JSA.
And although this headline annoys many people, it also has to be remembered that ?16K is almost half the Average National Income of ?31K and ?10.5K less than the Average Salary of ?26,500 (2014 figure).
I also realise that many people do not earn anywhere near those figures, but that is the disgraceful point of it all !!
It is an engineered effort to turn the poorly paid against the unemployed, instead of the poorly paid voicing their anger at their own miserable situation.

tbh i cant blame him for getting whats on offer if hes claiming it legit, but to blow 2 weeks money in a casino and brag about it is really rubbing it in, tbh cant see how hes entitled to that much per week as obviously hes fit an able, so if hes getting 205 a week in his pocket ( not including rent etc ) then hes obviously fiddling it as the most he should be getting is the rate for jsa, saying all that you cant believe what the papers say.

And this figure being mentioned ?26500 to live on i question their must be lot of people living on air.

being on benefit is just to make ends meet.

drive a fairly decent car.
never has to worry about anything. no council tax, no prescription charges and i can go on, on, on
