'Almost half of EU migrants claim benefits': The figures David Cameron will use to support reform bid.

Almost half of EU migrants who arrive in the UK are supported by the benefits system, Downing Street has claimed.

No 10 has released new figures which it says shows the extent to which EU migrants rely on the UK welfare system when they arrive.

David Cameron wants to change welfare rules as part of his efforts to renegotiate the UK's relationship with the EU ahead of an in/out referendum.

    The figures claim to show:

40% of all migrants who have arrived in the last four years are supported by the UK benefits system

66% receive in-work benefits such as tax credits while the rest receive out-of-work benefits

?6,000 the amount EU migrants claim per family through in-work benefits - costing taxpayer ?570m in 2013

And that is just the figures they are prepared to make public, which make a mockery of the statements about migrants putting more into the system than is extracted.
Also those figures do not take into account extra costs of interpreters, cost of educating their children, cost of using the NHS, government and EU money paid to them and their employers that was and still is being used to encourage them to come here.
The government know it is costing the country far too much but they are still trying to stay part of the EU because they know they can and do line their own pockets by staying in.

a whole ?570 million that would be better spent on MP's expenses or given to a private company that supplies paperclips to the public sector . I wonder how much the EU countries pay out to UK nationals working in them. I await the Tory media telling us, or maybe they won't. I certainly recall that places like the Netherlands halving the income tax rate for the first year for non Netherlanders - I wonder if they ever calculate the cost and publish it.

Maybe if employers had to pay a living wage, a real one, there'd be no need to claim in work benefits - so no reason to compalin. The UK seems hell bent on racing to the bottom of the pay around the world, and not about raising pay, and standards, so that we don't have to pay in work benefits and subsidising the profits of companies by encouraging them to pay less.

      Weird world eh....

It's not populist to point out that the government isn't giving all it's money to the EU, and giving huge amounts elsewhere. Next you'll be complaining that the government is giving ?1/4 billion to India despite that not needing it, and despite Dave saying he'd not give them any more aid. Ask Justine Greening, it's her department that is giving them it. Just as we're cutting services, we're giving India

          • ?26.1 million to boost the affordable housing market
          • ?35 million on education, including teacher training, schoolbooks and skills for job seekers
          • ?390,000 to provide street lights in the city of Jaipur
          • ?4 million for a wind farm in Rajasthan
          • ?39 million on health, including a survey to count abortions and unwanted pregnancies
          • ?31 million to a state regarded as India's 'corruption capital', where hundreds of government officials face graft charges
          • ?18 million on improving local government, including providing helpful tips on how to raise VAT on alcohol and petrol

as well as the ?1/4 billion. Perhaps some of the government have jobs lined up for post in India after 2020 if they get kicked out?

Then of course there is the Aid sent to India's neighbours Pakistan and Bangladesh who this year received ?338 Million and ?272 Million respectively.
But this is just a small part of the ?12 Billion spent on foreign aid each year.

But still more than benefits paid to those in work; to allow companies to not pay their staff enough money to live on so that he taxpayer foots the bill instead.

Totally agree Gaston, but as usual it will be the ordinary hard working people who will be left to pay for it all, and the government will continue to try blaming the poor and unemployed for the cost of it all.
